Mauritius is the biggest of the Mascarene Isles, Reunion and Rodrigues being the other ones. Although first discovered by the Portuguese, the Dutch were first to settle there. It became however French territory before becoming a British possession. As a consequence we have today a very unique and rather complex linguistic situation. The 108 feet statue of Lord Shiva (Shiva Statue) at Ganga Talao or Grand Bassin, Mauritius Island. The Shiva Statue was inaugurated in 2007 and the 'Sthapan' was done during the Maha Shivratri period of 2008.

This is the second tallest statue of Lord Shiva in the world.

This small lake is, according to hindu beliefs connected underneath with the sacred Ganges river and is thus sacred as well. Shiva statue is nearby.
