Packed up bags and tent and ready to leave by 8am for the long drive down to the Masai Mara. Moses had to leave us today to take another tour group to Meru National Park (as he knows it best) so on route we met up with Simba and transferred our bags to his van before saying goodbye to and thank you to Moses. We stopped for lunch and a loo break by a curio shop where we bought more souvenirs before heading down to Wajee Mara Camp not far outside the Masai Mara gates.
We met Patrick, the camp manager just off the main road & drove with him down the very rough & bumpy track to the camp. It was a beautiful campsite nestled among trees. We also met Peter there & were given a glass of juice before being shown to our permanent tent – we were in Ndovu tent which is elephant in Maasai. It was a nice spacious tent, nice and light when we opened the flaps, with two double beds and a wet room out the back.
After settling in we headed down to the covered tables for tea & biscuits then headed
Cheetahs
Maasai Mara out for our first game drive in the Mara. We saw:
• Elephants (lots! Including babies)
• Vultures
• Kori’s bustard
• Impala
• Buffalo
• Topi
• Gazelles (Grant’s and Thompson’s)
• Ostrich
• Cheetah (group of 3)
• Woodpecker? (see photo)
• Warthog
• Silver-backed jackal
Back at camp we showered the sat by the fire until suppertime which we had with a glass of white wine (having asked for a bottle to last us the three nights). Whilst chatting with Patrick in the evening Chavaunne and I were given Maasai names – Chavaunne’s is Nashipai (unsure if that's spelt right!)meaning "happy" whilst mine is Naserian meaning "blessing". We were also taught some more animal names:
Samba – lion
Duma – cheetah
Ndovu – elephant
Chui – leopard
Punda milia – Zebra (striped donkey!)
Simba milia – Tiger (striped lion)
Twiga – Giraffe
