Europe » Lithuania » Klaipeda January 24th 2024

One of the reasons that I came to Klaipeda was to visit the Curonian Spit. However, after doing some research it seemed like it would be rather difficult to do in winter. The ferry didn’t go to the main town, Nida, during the off-season. None of the museums or attractions nearish to the ferry would be open on the day I planned to visit. I could only find limited information about the bus that traversed the spit and it was very infrequent (and rather expensive) in winter and it didn’t seem to link up with the ferry well. I thought about just taking the ferry and going for a bit of a walk along the Curonian Spit as then at least I could have visited it, but as I woke up early to the wind howling ... read more

I was up earlyish and headed to the bus station for my bus to Klaipeda. I was glad I didn’t have to far to walk with my stuff. The bus station was well organised and I found where my bus was leaving from and when I saw it had arrived I headed out to board. The journey to Klaipeda was a couple of hours or so and uneventful. It was cold and miserable when I arrived. My accommodation was a good 20-30 minute walk from the bus station. The first part was through a housing estate and the path there was pretty dicy. I managed not to fall on the ice. All good! Then it was along the main streets, which were ice free. I was able to do an early check-in at my accommodation and ... read more

Europe » Lithuania » Kaunas » Kaunas January 22nd 2024

I was slow off the mark this morning. I was enjoying the warmth and my coffee too much. I’d had a bit of a fail when trying to plan what to do today as all museums in Kaunas (maybe Lithuania in general) were all closed on a Monday. This was slightly annoying as I was looking forward to spending some time indoors to escape the cold. I set off and took a different route from yesterday to reach the Old Town area. This route was more straight forward and through the town. I walked past a couple of pieces of street art on the way so stopped to photograph those. The first was a mural on the side of a building on Kestutis Street of Leja Goldberg, a poet and scholar, which was accompained by text ... read more

I don’t think I slept a wink as I was too nervous about waking up early. I got up around three and was out the door by four. I was staying just a couple of minutes walk from the airport bus stop so headed there. I thought there might be some drunken revellers about but the streets were quiet. I didn’t have to wait long for the bus and the journey itself was quick. Deposited in front of Edinburgh Airport, I made my way into the terminal and headed to the luggage self check in. That was straight forward apart from figuring out how to actually attach the label. A nice member of staff helped me out. I haven’t checked luggage on Ryanair in years, and the last time I did it they still had people ... read more

Middle East » Turkey » Marmara » Istanbul January 11th 2024

After getting my morning coffee, I headed over to the area near the Spice Bazaar as that is where my food tour was starting from. I arrived a little early, so had a quick walk around the area. It was pretty quiet. I came across a little statue of a man and a boy with a table between them. The man was giving the boy a Simit and the boy was counting out his money. It was interesting because the table was empty, and there were some actual Simit and baguettes on it. I wonder if it was a good luck thing. I headed back to the cafe Brew Coffeeworks and met a couple of other guests who were on the tour and then the guide turned up and we went inside. The guide explained a ... read more

Middle East » Turkey » Marmara » Istanbul » Sultanahmet January 10th 2024

An early start today as I wanted to get out and beat the queues, if they existed. I am still not used to venturing out in the dark in the mornings. It felt like the middle of the night and watching people do their daily commute in the dark made me relieved that I wasn’t. First stop was the nearest Starbucks for coffee. The cafe was home to a cat, which seemed to have the run of the place. It has really impressed me, all the animals that are on the loose in the city, that they are well cared for and just do their own thing side by side with us humans and neither bother each other. It says good things about the citizens of Istanbul. Once the coffee was consumed, I walked down the ... read more

An overnight flight meant an early morning arrival into Istanbul. Getting through the airport was unproblematic and I made it down to the airport shuttle. The bus journey was quicker than I had anticipated. It was however pretty cramped and there was nothing to see as it was still dark and I think we were just on motorways. I had booked a place to stay that was near the shuttle drop off point, so there wasn’t a long walk with my luggage. The place was meant to have a 24 hour reception, but I sent a while in the rain ringing the doorbell as the desk staff were MIA. I did get to check-in early, so that was nice and it meant I could have a quick shower and freshen up after my flight. Once I ... read more

I had hoped to have an early start, but since I didn't arrive into Guangzhou late the evening before and didn't get into bed until after midnight, I was a little slow off the mark. Once sorted, I repacked my case ready for my late night departure and ordered some breakfast. I headed downstairs as the place I was staying at had a cafe on the ground floor and I ordered an iced americano as I was no longer used to the Guangdong heat since moving a bit further north. I got a nice surprise that as a guest my coffee had a slight discount. I drank my coffee and waited for my breakfast to arrive. I nearly missed the delivery bloke as he raced off up the stairs. I'm glad I saved him having to ... read more

I had the morning to spend in Changsha as my train wasn't until the afternoon. I headed to McDonald's for a coffee and a quick breakfast before making my way to the subway station. I took the train to Kai Fu temple, the temple was only a short walk away from the subway station, but the road in front of it was jam packed with cars, which was a shame as it meant that I coulsn't get any decent photos of the temple's beautiful facade. I found the cashier's window, paid my 10 yuan entrance fee and was given a bundle of incense sticks. Since it was a Sunday morning, the temple was packed. Kaifu Temple was built by a monk called Baoning on the site of Huichun Park. The park was given to him by ... read more

After my expensive Starbucks the previous morning, I headed to McDonald's for my caffeine fix. Much cheaper, but a lot scruffier. I took the subway to Yingwanzhen station, which is near the start of the trail up Yuelushan mountain. There were a lot of people heading to the mountain. There were entry gates and it was the same mini program as the one I was unable to use for Orange Island so I just snuck through when the gates opened for the person in front of me. The mountain isn't much of a mountain, more like a big hill. The first part of the trail was along the road and just a gradual climb. I passed the entrance to the cable car that can take you to the top, but it was closed for maintenance. The ... read more
