Hi everyone,

This is our first post so hi. My boyfriend and I are travelling to Rio in May and plan to bus from Rio to Iguazu falls. Can anyone suggest a good reliable bus company? We are looking to travel at night so those that have cama or semi cama?

Can you suggest somewhere to stop en route? Is there a usual route recommended for doing this?
Any help is much appreciated!

Hi Caroline, hi Kieran,

As far as I know, only two bus companies do this route: Pluma and Kaiowa. I have no experience in either, but in general bus travel is very comfortable in Brazil. However, why do you want to travel by bus? If you book well in advance, flights are usually much cheaper. At a random date in May, I found rates as low as R$126. Check out webJet, Gol, TAM, Trip or Azul, or decolar.com.br Reply to this

I would personally go with Pluma over Kaiowa, but I'd also agree with Jens that there are so many cheap flights available that the bus is increasingly being abandoned. It's a popular route with a lot of competition so you can often find flights with Go and webJet for the same as the bus, if not less... The scenery is nothing special on this route and it is a long journey so are you sure you want to do it?

If you definitely want to do the bus, then Curitiba is the usual stopover but - although it's a very pleasant city - there's not a whole lot to do as a visitor.

Thank you both for your comments. We had assumed the bus would be cheaper than flying and in the past when we looked at flights in South America they looked like it would cost alot more but having checked your suggestions it looks like this may well be the better option so thank you! Do you have any experience on the journey from Iguazzu Falls to Buenos Aires as we are thinking about this also? Reply to this

Well, buses are better in Argentina (I would say) than Brazil and internal flights aren't quite as cheap, but it's still a long old journey from Iguazu to BA. You could break it in Santa Fe (which is lovely) or if you have time, I'd really recommend going Iguazu-Ciudad del Este (on the paraguayan side of the frontier)-Asuncion-Santa Fe?

Or you could get a very quick flight Iguazu-BA of course! Been a little while since I checked, but I think about $200? Buses will be more like $50-60, depending on how many stops you make.

Dear BigH86,
Did you manage to do the trip rio to iguazu to BA as you have planned?
I am planning to do the same route in early Feb and I would be very grateful if you can share what you did and which company you used.
Thanks! Reply to this
