I understand there is no longer a ferry service between Panama and Colombia. Does anybody have a suggestion on how to get to Colombia from Panama. My travel mode is bycicle and tent.
Reply to this i heard that it is possible to travel on a private boat of some individuals who go from Panama to Colombia and back. not sure where they leave though.
Reply to this I dont know where they leave from panama, but most of them arrive in Cartagena in colombia. I havent been, but heard a trillion stories and seen the photos - next year i'll be doing it for sure.
Reply to this Yes, I did the trip from Panama to Colombia. I met this stereotype Colombian captain in the Voyager Hostel (Panama City, this is the place to arrange yachts). I had written emails with him before he came to the hostel in order to arrange the trip. I think he likes it when you write him in Spanish. We had to take a funny 20 minutes flight to El Porvenir, the "first" San Blas island, where his private yacht was. The trip to Cartagena took 5 days and was amazing, although I was sick all the time (I had caught the flu earlier, it was not because of the rough sea or so...). I think it is the best way to visit remote San Blas islands without seeing any other tourists as some islands are visited by cruise ships... Those are the most beautiful islands I have ever seen! It cost about 200 US dollars, about the same as taking a flight to Cartagena. I can mail you the captain's mail address if you want...
Reply to this Whatever you do, don't go overland unless you're into trips with a 60% death rate. Your bike and tent won't help you in this journey, I'm afraid.

Reply to this Hi . I was wondering if Sjoerde could send me that captins email address. It sounds like a really amazing trip. I would be doing it the other way, i.e. from colombia to panama. Was it expensive by the way? How much did you organise this before hand? do you think if i turned up it would be ok?
Thanks
Reply to this Hi Conquistador Azteca.
This April i will do the same and have the same problem to cross from panama to colombia and have my truck also, if you want we can meet and talk about it, maybe we can share a container. I speak spanish. Jose M
Hi Sjoerde.

thanks
Jose
Reply to this Theres a cheap airline that gets you from Panama City to Caragena for $150 USD. Cant remember the name of it, but found it on the Lonely Planet Thorntree forum. All the other airlines are more like $300 USD - so worthwhile checking it out! E
Reply to this i was looking for this service to my trip but unfortunately they don´t run it at december/january because of the weather... it is very hard to find a boat leaving this period, because of the huricanes....
Reply to this It´s Totally Possible I just did it about 2 months ago. I went From Portobello Panama to Capurgana Columbia. It took 6 days and was an absolute BLAST!! I Highly Recommend it. Here it all the info you´ll need.
Captain Javier is the Guy who took us. Speaks a bit of English but Spanish is better!! Here´s his Website. Call and E-mail him

Reply to this hi everyone,
I am currently traveling from the USA to Ecuador with my car. I am already in Honduras and I am going to move southward pretty fast now. I have been looking for informations about ferry boats able to carry my car and myself to Colombia from Panama but I found nothing. Do you have any suggestion?
Reply to this Hi Sjoerde do you (or anyone else that has asked you) got the captains name for the boat to colombia?? Hoping to do the trip in 3 weeks? Thanks, T
Reply to this I think Aires (http://www.aires.com.co/) is the cheap airline that Ellen mentions above. We flew with them from Cartagena to Panama, and it is good value, though the departure tax from Cartagena airport is almost the same cost as the flight.
