Today’s goal was the North Rim
Of the Grand Canyon. While we’d visited there 2 years ago, it was late in the afternoon and we had a limited amount of time. The drive from Kanab was beautiful. As usual we looked for any sign of wildlife but didn’t see any.
To go to the National Parks cost about $35.00 a car. Several years ago when Terry and I were climbing the Currituck lighthouse, the attendant said to us, “If it wouldn’t hurt your feelings, I’d tell you that you look old enough to buy the seniors National Park pass for only $10.00.” (We’d already paid $10.00 to climb the lighthouse). We told her we were sure we were old enough and bought the passes. We certainly have made our money back multiple times. Karen and Ed bought one 2 years ago, so between the 4 of us we have three passes. They are lifetime passes. Just think we have been to 8 parks so far this year and 11 two years ago. So do the math. Collectively we paid $120.00 for our passes and in just 2 trips we’ve saved $665. This doesn’t include any other trips we’ve made. so
get your senior parks pass!!
We stopped at the first overlook on the way to the park. Terry and Ed struck up a conversation with a mother and daughter traveling from Las Vegas. As it turns our the we’re from Pittsburgh, mother was born in Wheeling, and the daughter lived near Harpers Ferry for a while. Small world indeed!!
When we arrived at the North Rim we took the short hike to Angel Point. It is narrow with no handrails or protection. One slip and you’d go over the edge. Some of the cabins are pretty close to the edge. Terry said he’d hate to be a sleepwalker and stay there!! It is worth the hike to see the beauty of the canyon.
This time we decided to drive out Cape Royal Road to Point Imperial and Vista Encantada. My goodness it was beautiful at both places. Point Imperial is the highest point in the North Rim at 8803 feet.
Vista Encantada also didn’t disappoint. While there we saw one of the helicopters, that give tours, fly over the canyon. I got a picture but it wasn’t great! We actually thought the views from here were
better than from the visitors center.
On our way back to Kanab we stopped at The Inn at Jacobs Lake. When we were out here 2years ago we stopped here and had a meal. We were impressed by the prices and merchandise at their gift shop so we wanted to stop again. We left there with bags of their famous cookies and a selection of T-shirts and hats. All in all it was a successful day.
Back in Kanab we stopped in at Houston’s Trail’s end restaurant. It was all decorated in cowboy motif and had several TVs on the walls. Instead of playing sports they were playing western movies and ads for their 7 day horseback ride through the back country. The food was great! The service, awesome!! Good choice!
Now Kanab has plaques all over town commemorating the actors and actresses that have made movies in that area. I went off on the hunt of them. There is also a lodge…Parry’s, which housed the crew, actors, actresses and anyone associated with the movie being filmed. It is still a motel but also a museum of sorts. I was able to go in and take
pictures and read all the information. I’m so glad I was able to visit.
One famous actor on their wall of fame….Terry Wilson!! He was most noted for playing in all 267 episodes of Wagon Train. It’s a show we watch so we knew of him. I just didn’t expect to see his picture on the wall.
Back at the condo we were preparing for tomorrow’s departure. This was going to be a challenging day as we were going to fit in several sites all packed into a 9 hour drive.
