I stayed at the Hub by Premier Inn near Haymarket Station. I chose this hotel due to the inexpensive price and mostly good reviews. It also seemed to be close enough to everything I wanted to see. I did know ahead of time the rooms were compact and my room may not have a window. Fortunately I did have a window and everything I needed in a room. For one person, this room was plenty. I had a double bed and a bathroom which included a large shower. Due to the size of the room the tea/coffee facilities were in the lobby, accessible 24/7. I am not sure if there were larger rooms if traveling as a couple. I would think the room too small for two people plus luggage, but if you don’t mind close ... read more

Today was my last day in Edinburgh. I had no plans so no alarm was set, which was a nice change! After breakfast I headed out towards Dean Village. By Google Maps this was a short .6 mile walk which sounded lovely after doing so much walking the past few days. Being Sunday the streets were pretty empty, although that could also just be the area. My walk took me down by the National Galleries of Scotland: Modern Two. Not my kind of museum but it was by an entrance to the Water of Leith Walkway. The Water of Leith is the main river flowing through central Edinburgh. The walkway follows it for 12 miles, but I only did a small portion. The path along the river was quiet, peaceful and green. It was nice to ... read more

Started the day off with a hearty breakfast and then headed for the train station. Today’s destinations, Stirling and Linlithgow. The trains here are super easy to navigate. You can buy a ticket through the app, using one of the machines in the stations or by visiting one of the helpful information folks. I went the in-person route as I wanted to make sure I knew what I was doing. Tickets can be one way or return and allow you to get on and off at any station in between the origin and destination. The ticket can also be used at any time during the day, which is super helpful when you do not know your return time! The trip from Haymarket to Stirling is about 50 minutes and the train I took made a few ... read more

Even though I’m sure I could find a cheaper breakfast somewhere I paid ahead of time to have the hotel breakfast. I like to eat and be able to go back to the room to brush my teeth and gear up for the day. I will say the porridge here is pretty good! One lady asked the guy how they made it and he said they use Jersey Cream. She replied they cannot make it as creamy in Germany. Besides porridge there is a selection of bread and small pastries, granola, yogurt, mixed fruits and tea and coffee. The porridge I had in Ireland in 2007 is still the best ever but I cannot express how excited I am to be eating something similar again😊 My castle ticket was pre-booked for 9:30 so I headed out ... read more

Crossing another country off my bucket list! Technically I have been to the UK before when I was one and a half but I have never been to Scotland. Castle ruins, abbey ruins, amazing scenery and the Scottish accent are the reasons I have long wanted to visit. SAS had a great sale where I was actually able to fly into Edinburgh for not a lot of money. I booked the flight back in August and finally the day arrived to leave! Original flight plan was O'Hare to Stockholm, 11 hour layover which would allow me to get out and explore a little bit and then on to Edinburgh. However SAS changed the itinerary and here is how my travel day went. I worked until 2, did some last minute stuff at the house and then ... read more

Finally arrived in Edinburgh, a couple of weeks later than planned, just ahead of Storm Babet. Expecting the worst, we donned our macs and headed into the city. What a great city to explore, transport was plentiful, and I loved walking the Royal mile in old town. Its no wonder JK Rowling drew inspiration for Hogwarts here, with the turreted, dark stone architecture. It was a race to the castle as we were informed it would be closed tomorrow (due to the storm), we arrived just in time for the 1pm gun salute. The crowds gathered to see a man in uniform light an old WW2 Field gun, which was a little disappointing as I was expecting a cannon! We queued to see the Honours of Scotland (crown jewels) which were impressive, but most atmospheric was ... read more

Today our cruise ship stopped at South Queensferry in Edinburgh. After getting off the ship we had to take a shuttle into Edinburgh. I booked tickets in advance to see Edinburgh Castle but somehow could not find the tickets online. So instead, Renata and I decided to walk the Royal Mile. The Royal Mile The Royal Mile is a street that runs between two significant locations (Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse). Along the Royal Mile, we 1. Took some pictures with Owls 2. Stopped by the Writers Museum, 3. Entered St. Giles Cathedral 4. Passed Tolbooth Tavern (Now a Scottish Pub. The building used to be a toll collection station, a Council Chamber, a Police Court and a Prison.) 5. Visited Bakehouse Close (the site of Alexander Malcom’s print shop and where Jamie and ... read more

Today has all the hallmarks of the pick day in Edinburgh, early time slot to visit Edinburgh Castle, then a quick taxi ride to lunch with Anne. After breakfast in the our room, we headed out up the 200 meters to the entrance of Edinburgh Castle . As you walked into the temporary stadium which has been built for the Military Tattoo on the 4th to 26th August was as intimidating as walking into the Colosseum or MCG. After checking in we started the walk up to the Argyle Battery which also has 3 x 105mm Field Guns are position to fire a salute at 1pm each day. After the walk up we saw the cafe and decided it was time for our morning coffee, good thing we did as when we were leaving, the queue ... read more

Todays focus was about touring the Royal Yacht Britannia once the queens boat and have lunch at The Fish Market in Newhaven. Our choice of transport for today was Edinburgh Trams, while they only have one route, it goes from the Airport to Newhaven through the centre of Edinburgh. While the reams are smaller, they are much quieter and smoother than those in Melbourne. Coincidentally the second to last stop from New Haven was Royal Yacht Britannia. We spend two and a half hours exploring the 5 decks on display, ranging from the top deck where the Queen and The Dukes cabins and the Land Rover Garage, all the way down to the Engine room and living quarters of the engineering sailors. The biggest ... read more

Today was all about getting around as much of the Tourist spots we can. We defaulted back to the Hop on Hop off Bus and their red line. We chose this for expedience, but tomorrow we had different choices. But before that there was Edinburgh Farmers Market just down the hill from our accommodations. We walked down to see some of their farm produce and maybe get breakfast. Our breakfast was a tale of two cities with Rose selecting a Falafel wrap and the Falafel's were cooked to order. She loved it and it was very good. On the other hand, I was seduced by the whole pig on the spit, but that is where it ended, the pork was bland and soggy, the milk bun fell apart from the moister and I picked the filling ... read more
