Europe » Macedonia May 13th 2024

North Macedonia Friday 3rd May 2024 We left , Albania and then we drove through a seaside town, and we had to go across a bit of unmade road to get to the Border!! Got through in about ½ hour and Chris got his Green Card!! Our first stop was the Monastery Saint Naum. It had started to rain again so I don’t think we were able to give it justice! Even the peacocks were sheltering from the rain- the boat trips to see the Springs were still going though!! Walked across a bridge that was gushing water from underneath ( I can only assume from the spring!) into Lake Orhid. The monastery was established in 905 by St Naum of Orhid himself ,and he is also buried in the church! ( That explains why people ... read more

Wednesday 24th April 2024- Got the bus with no trouble, well apart from having to pay a bus station tax of 2 euros per person, as well as give the driver of the coach 2 euros each for our cases!! Beautiful scenery, just as well it was sunny today! After Budva, we took the road we should have taken yesterday to Cetinje and onto Podgorica. Stopped for 10mins toilet break and then took the E762 to the Border crossing. No hold-ups this time, and apart from having to get off the bus 2x (We could have walked as it was only about 100 metres!!) we were into Albania in about half an hour!! Carried on, past another part of Shkodra Lake, viewing the mountains that still had snow on them, to Shkoder. Saw the castle that ... read more

Europe » Montenegro » Kotor May 10th 2024

Saturday 20th April 2024 Well hello Montenegro!! Caught the bus to Dubrovnik bus station, coach turned up early ( not the modern Flixbus but a Jadran Express...( Toilet didn’t work!) white coach with an eighty year old( I’m guessing!!) with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth, driver!! This couldn’t be our driver, surely not.....but yes it was. And to be fair he did get us here despite over 2 hours delay at border!! Stunning scenery, especially where went into Montenegro as the coach took us all the way around the Bay of Kotor, which took about an hour!! The Bay was surrounded by mountains and it was definitely black over the mountains by Kotor! NB Sit on right hand side of bus! Sure enough, as we arrived at Kotor, the heavens opened and we got ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Dubrovnik May 10th 2024

Dubrovnik!! Got here at last!! One of the places I had always wanted to visit, but never quite got round to it!! Flight from Bristol was only 2 ½ hours and we were treated to views of snow, the Alps (I think!) before all the islands along the Croatian coast. We had arranged for a taxi to collect us and drop us at the Amoret Apartments in the Old Town! What we didn’t realize is that Dubrovnic is pedestrianised, and no cars can enter therefore we were dropped, by the taxi, at gate no 2, which according to google, meant we had a 7 minute walk! That would have been ok under normal circumstances, but wifi signal was periodically bad and the map was upside down! Then Chris fell over, ( he tripped over my suitcase ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Alhaurin el Grande March 14th 2024

Everything went as planned - apart from getting absolutely drenched in Wales on the 21stFeb on the way to the airport!! Caught the end of the carnival in Mijas on the Sunday ( I always thought they finished 40 days before Easter?!) and did a few walks, including going up to the Castle at Alora and lunch at Kens with all the dogs (Six of them!!) We were leading a walk up the Alhaurin mountain so that was reccyd and then enjoyed by about 20 people and we also went to a few of the European Cricket matches as well where the Scottish Team and supporters all turned up dresses as ‘Vinny’ – the cricket commentator who dresses very flamboyantly!! Unfortunately we are not here for the finals ☹ My sister also came over for a ... read more

Spain – Spring 2024 4th Jan – 8th Feb & 21st Feb – 13thMar It was like having two Christmas’!! We came back to Spain earlier than usual ( After a month of rain in the uk!!) on the 4th January so that we could see the Three Kings Parade on the 5th January!! They hadn’t had any rain in Spain and I think we must have brought some weather back with us , as we got caught in a horrific thunderstorm and got soaked!!, As Paul said to us - ‘ God works in Mysterious Ways!!’ Mercadona was very busy the next day ( I suppose its like their Christmas Eve!!) and we bought a Roscon de Reyes filled with cream – everyone was buying them!! Europe » Spain » Andalusia December 3rd 2023

SPAIN Nov 15th – Dec 2nd This trip will be remembered, by me anyway, for ‘The Time that the Parrots Came’!! They have been on the coast for quite a few years (noisy horrible things but quite pretty to look at!!) and I always hoped that they wouldn’t move inland. We have had one or two over the years but now there seems to be a small flock of about twenty parrots that have moved into a large tree the Plaza de la Legion. One can only hope that they disappear, as quickly as they have appeared, otherwise it will be a sad goodbye to all the small native birds, as the parrots have no predators. Parrots excepted, it was a quiet, if not busy couple of weeks. We rented Howards car again and was duly ... read more

Europe » France » Lower Normandy » Honfleur October 14th 2023

Friday 13th October & Saturday 14thOctober – Honfleur, France An unexpected destination on a Greenland and Canada cruise, but as we had never been here before, and we knew people had liked it, we were looking forward to it and after having a rest on a sea day yesterday, were ready for it!! It didn’t disappoint!! Woke up to find that the ship had docked in the night and as we weren’t leaving until 1.00am on the 15th October, we had plenty of time! Off the ship onto a quick shuttle bus for 5mins to the centre of the town and because it was a Saturday, they had the resident market with loads of fresh fish and a guy cutting scallops!! Honfleur is soooo old! Loads and loads of medieval houses – I just couldn’t stop ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Cork » Cobh October 14th 2023

Saturday-Thursday 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th,11th, 12thOctober 2023 Cobh, S.Ireland We were informed that someone needed to be dropped at hospital so we went northward from Corner Brook to the Straight of Belle Isle between Newfoundland and Labrador, and a rib boat came to collect them at St Anthonys. Wild place – not much there…except a few dolphins playing around the headland!! Miles from anywhere ….or so it seemed!! Anyway, after 5 days at sea, we were going a bit stir crazy!! There is only so much reading, gazing at the fog, ice carving, fashion shows, towel folding, vegetable carving, shows, jigsaws and lectures you can do!! There is a full programme of activities but a lot of them are Mind, Body, Soul exercises, quizzes , choir or learn to play the ukelele!! We arrived at Cobh ... read more

Friday 6thOctober 2023 Cap aux Meulles, Iles de la Madeleine It didn’t happen!! Chris was up at 6.00am (I was up at 7.00am!!) breakfast and ready for the off at 9.00am. We were 3rd in the queue!! Then the Captain came on the tannoy and said that because it was a tender Port, the swell and wind were too strong, but it was due to drop down in the morning, so he was going to wait for ½ hr. This was a bit annoying as we had a car booked, ready to explore the island, and it was a lovely sunny day!! He came back on at 9.30am and said the wind and swell were still too strong, so he said he would wait for another 1hour. At ½ 10 he came back on and said ... read more
