Never too old

Linda

I am a very senior scuba diver and I am finishing up a five month scuba diving trip in SE Asia. I just finished my one hundredth dive since the start of the trip in April. I was certified in 1986 but didn't dive regularly until after my last child was born, when I was forty (I have seven). This is not my first trip to Asia; I dove in Palawan - Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia, and have taken dive trips to Cozumel, Canada, Malta, Bonaire, Honduras and Bahama, and have done dives in the Black Sea - Bulgaria, and Epcot Center in Florida. I tell people we dive where ever there is a puddle.

AFRICA THE SUN GOES DOWN After two days in the guesthouse, we packed the Big Red bus and headed into the Namib desert. Towering red sand dunes dwarfed us. Six Rings, our new campground, was named for the Sesriem Canyon. This gorge was purported to be six whips deep, the number of thongs needed for the settlers to get water out of the pools of water in the canyon, thus the name Six Rings. After lunch, we began to climb one of the enormous dunes to capture spectacular photos of the sunset. The sunset walk proved to be too strenuous for me. Everyone scurried up the dune except me. I dragged myself up. I was alone. There was no trail, just a view of the top of the dune. I picked a path that looked the ... read more

AFRICA WINDING DOWN We left the Cape and drove into Swakopmund, where we had our first two-day respite in a guesthouse. It felt so good to have a room to myself. I immediately made a reservation for two massages, one for each of our down days. While in Swakopmund, we had another opportunity to do some tourist activities. I chose to take a catamaran trip. What a marvelous experience. Sun and warm breezes. Seals came on board, as did several large pelicans, a white male, and a pink female. Their color is the result of their diet. The pelicans would sidle right up to people to have their photo taken and receive a treat. We also saw a sunfish right near the side of the catamaran. Wow! Dolphins rode the waves at the prow of the ... read more

AFRICA - OUR CARAVAN CONTINUES Of course, I knew Africa was vast, but our daily travel confused me. There were no street signs and few cities or towns. We drove for days on unimproved roads, mere sandy tracks. Our trip could be an episode of "Where's Waldo?" or "Where in Africa is Carmen Sandiego?" I was surprised by the constantly changing terrain. There were game drives through Etosha National Park in Namibia. Herds of animals grazed the flat, grassy plain. Then, huge granite domes rose out of the desert at Spitskoppe. We watched a dramatic sunset on a walk to Sossusvlei over the world's highest sand dunes. And we even visited the wild and rocky shore of the South Atlantic. During our two days in Etosha, we stayed in a campground with a floodlit waterhole where ... read more

AFRICA - THE RED BUS The trip truly began on Day 3. It was the first day of breaking camp early, transferring our bags to a big blue tarp near the Big Red Bus. Then we dismantled the tent, rolled it up, and took it to the tour director packing the bus. The other tour leader cooked breakfast while we gathered in a circle of camp chairs. The breakfasts were always good, offering daily options such as dry cereal, yogurt, milk, fruit, and a cooked plate: oatmeal, bacon and eggs, or pancakes. Usually, there was tea, but I am a real tea drinker, and only rarely was there time for a second cup due to our travel itinerary. I'm a creature of habit, and I missed my toast as well. The plan for Day 3 was ... read more

AFRICA - CHOOSING ADVENTURE Day Two: I got up early. Locating things in a dark tent was a challenge. I had the 5' by 5' by 5' tent all to myself, and my belongings were strewn from corner to corner. I was late for the morning meeting, which explained the plans for the day. After breakfast and clean-up, Hubert and I met our driver in the parking lot. He drove us to the horse ranch. Hubert signed us up for ½ day of horseback riding. Neither of us was very experienced. Hubert was enthusiastic and excited but hadn't been on a horse since high school. Our guide took us over some basic riding skills and then led the way onto the desert. We rode through scrub brush and sand and went up close to several giraffes. ... read more

AFRICA JULY 13 – AUGUST 8, 2022 This trip was very different from others I have taken. I usually just decide on a country, buy the tickets and go. I have traveled to Indonesia, Europe, and Central and South America. But for Africa, I was a little nervous. Africa is a continent. It is huge. And everything would be new. I thought a tour might be better this time. I chose one offered by Rosy’s Responsible Travel. These tours include sightseeing, tourist activities, and opportunities to learn about the country's culture and cities being visited. The tour, led by Sunway Safaris was a 15-day interactive camping trip in Africa at a really reasonable price. I love to backpack, and I like hands-on experiences. I did not want a tour where you get off a big, crowded ... read more

ON THE MEND Hawaii is a favorite travel destination for Americans. We were three older ladies, almost strangers, in a condominium in Hawaii. We had all been to Hawaii more than once. Recreational ballroom dancing was our common bond. After Covid, there were no venues open for recreational ballroom dancing in Kona. However, is there a more beautiful place to spend time relaxing and getting to know one another better than Hawaii? I was still recuperating from my broken clavicle, but I was gaining strength and mobility. As we got settled in we started finding more to do around the area. We went to a really nice public park on the beach. We shopped at a great little thrift shop, called Memory Lane. They had great low prices and sales and we went several times. We ... read more

HEALING IN HAWAII KONA APRIL 2022 In early 2022 I began thinking about my next trip and I started reading tours offered on a travel site called Rosie’s Responsible Travel. A 21-day camping trip on the African continent caught my imagination. I began working on the required visas and immunizations. Africa is so diverse and so big and I felt a little shaky about organizing my own trip, but an ordinary packaged tour felt too tame. I backpack so I have tenting experience and guests on this journey are expected to contribute and help prepare meals, and set up and tear down our own tents. The tour company changed my proposed trip to one that starts on my birthday. It is a big one…my 80th. So the company announced my age on the paperwork, not that ... read more

PORTO RENDEZVOUS After leaving my hostel, I made several false starts to figure out how to exit Santarem. I even asked a policeman; he was unfamiliar with walking in the city. He gave me driving directions, which were of no help to me. I decided to have another breakfast and ponder the problem. An up-scale coffee shop called my name; I ordered and took my first bite. I realized in a panic that I had left my hiking sticks again! Leaving all my possessions behind, I raced back to the grocery store, where I had bought water and nuts for the day. There were the walking sticks leaning against the wall. What a relief! That’s the third time I forgot them in twenty-four hours! Returning to the café, I finished my sweet roll and tea and ... read more

STILL LISBON I left the Dormidas Silvina hostel in Alverca around noon; after my hand-washed clothes were dry. It was only a few blocks from a mall where I had a big lunch in a cafeteria. I found a Chinese import store on the lower level and bought an electrical adapter, and I got directions to the El Camino, still on the ’98 Expo walking path on the river. It was a beautiful day. I was still taking it easy. I found a café, ate a mouthwatering hamburger with homemade potato chips, and watched the people enjoying the park. Terrific. I called the hostel Vila Franca de Xira for a reservation. No answer. Just as I rose to leave, I got a callback. The man on the phone suggested I catch a train to Alhandra, bypassing ... read more
