Southeastern Europe

Returning to Europe only six months on from my last visit, it's high time I finally got around to exploring Eastern Europe properly. On seven previous trips to the continent I have almost exclusively travelled through its western half (with my only previous glimpses behind the former Iron Curtain being a pair of visits to Prague and a three-week foray through southern Poland and Slovakia) so I have come up with a plan, ambitious as always, to effectively undertake two completely different trips, one after the other, that will hopefully enable me to explore as much as possible of Southeastern Europe.

The first trip is intended as an old-fashioned backpacking jaunt through the former Yugoslav countries of Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Montenegro (and possibly North Macedonia), before finishing up in Albania. And though my arrival in the middle of Spring is likely to preclude me from getting up into the high mountains as I did on my extended trekking trip of last summer, I have no intention of whiling away any more time than necessary in towns and cities; not while a cavalcade of natural attractions is lying in wait...
