Another day, another island. Today we caught the Aran Island Ferry from Galway Harbour to Kilronan Village on Inishmore, the largest of the Aran Islands. We drove down to the ferry terminal arriving at about 8.45am for our 9.30am sailing because we were asked to arrive that early in an email. Hmmn, we could have arrived later because Bernie had done all our paperwork online weeks ago when he booked the ferry. With rain falling and no shelter to queue under until they opened the gate for boarding, we decided to retreat to the car! When we could see the queue start to move at 9.00am we headed over to tag onto the end to board the ferry. Even though we were far from the first on board we managed to snag the front seats on ... read more

I recorded yesterday that our room is small but not HOW small. The room is so small that when we open the door it smacks into the end of the bed at one third open, and we have to walk through it sideways! The room is so small that there is literally nowhere to put two suitcases but being a resourceful couple, we have balanced one suitcase on top of the mini bar fridge and the other on the wide windowsill. Thank goodness for the deep/wide windowsill. The room is so small it has no room for bedside tables. On one side there is a desk which sort of doubles as a bedside table but on the other side there is nowhere to put the phone and the watch on the charger although Bernie has managed ... read more

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. When we were mapping out our itinerary and booking accommodation, sailing out to Skellig Michael was an activity high on our list, if not top of our list. To facilitate that we decided to book three nights in Portmagee so we would be really close to where the boat departs from and we booked three nights thinking that if we couldn’t sail on the day we booked for, our first full day in Portmagee, then we ‘might’ be able to re-book for the next day and switch Skellig Michael and the Dingle Peninsula on our itinerary if necessary. As things turned out we were able to sail to Skellig Michael on the day planned so we didn’t really need the spare day in Portmagee. BUT, having to do the Dingle Peninsula ... read more

When I told my friends that I would be traveling to Ireland, I got similar comments, "Ireland is green, greener and greenest. The people are friendly, friendlier, and friendliest people they have ever met." I must agree that their observations are extremely accurate. The scenery is stunning, and the people are kind, helpful and, yes, very friendly. I believe there is another trait. The places we have visited so far are tidy, tidier, and tidiest. There are not any wrappers, empty bottles, cigarette butts, or bits of trash on the streets or roads. When we made this observation to our driver he informed us that each town enters the 'tidiest town' contest. People take such pride in their towns and their reward is to be named 'The Tidiest Town.' Last year Abbeyleix in County Lapis won ... read more

In order to make the off peak time at the Cliffs of Moher, we got up for an 8am breakfast. Our hotel was not outfitted with breakfast facilities so we found a local cafe that was a 5 minute walk and open at that time of day. Kyle decided to join us since he was up already for his fishing day while Alex chose to sleep in and get ready while we ate. I managed to get a ginger tea from there as well as a Full Irish Breakfast to start my day well as I had all trip successfully so far. I had managed to avoid throwing up all but that first day which was a huge win! After we ate, Kyle stayed behind to join his coworkers brother in their boat fishing exploration. We ... read more

With little other options, Kyle actually joined us for breakfast this morning. Dining in the same spot at dinner the night before everyone filled themselves between the buffet and hot dinner order before we finished packing up. As checkout was the same time as our tour end, we packed up the car ahead of time. The maintenance man/ tour guide took us around the estate the next 2.5 hours sharing immense amount of information about the history of Ireland, progression of the house through that history, details on the fauna, and even stories about his own life. He talked all over the place which drove me a bit crazy, but we learned a lot. We also walked the beautiful estate setting it from many angles. Every photo we took was just phenomenal. I can't wait to ... read more

Today was a moving day to Galway, so bags out at 7:30, then breakfast, then on and gone by 8:30. On the way to Galway we stopped for a comfort stop (restrooms, snacks, and drinks). The place we stopped was just in front of Bunratty Castle. It’s a place Marsha, Shealyn, and I visited on our trip to Ireland! What a coincidence! We also drove by a golf course. Now I’m not a golfer but this was the toughest looking golf course I’ve ever seen. Look at the pictures. I’m not sure a golf cart would go across that land. Our first goal was The Cliffs of Moher. These cliffs are absolutely breathtaking!! They rise above the ocean 702 feet and you can climb up the left side or right. We opted to take the golf ... read more

Friday saw us pick up our rental car which is very underwhelming. It is a Dacia Jogger which is very basic (notwithstanding a manual). After being assured it had Apple Play it doesnt and we have very manual GPS which immediately caused chaos and missed turn-offs. We have now got into a better routine and making the best of it. The trip over to Galway from Dublin was pretty uneventful, we stopped at the Kildare Factory Outlet Stores and each purchased new cloths. Other than that there was not much else to report, except a lot of green grass and stone fences and we have chosen to combine Friday and Saturday in Galway as one post. Saturday started off a sunny warm day and we planned to travel the Wild Atlantic Way, w... read more

So today we have a long drive over lots of small roads and I can still see the Sky Road on the horizon in the map. Well we wake up early and as it is quite misty I think great there is no way we need to do the sky road as why would you do this if you cannot see in front of your face - unfortunately, definitely for me, the bloody skies started clearing as we approached the sky road and macho man Mike decides we will do it then as we turn he says to me are you happy doing this - well that is like a red rag to a bull of course I am happy to DIE on the sky road. Well let’s be honest if you do the north to ... read more
