We are back at base, we were due to head straight to Scotland, to include the North Coast 500 - as the name suggest a trip around the coast of the Highlands. First though we need to have some work to alter the Air Suspension that we had fitted, unfortunately this was on the south coast. But every cloud has a silver lining, and we used the available time to head to one of my favourite parts of the country, Dorset. We based ourselves at East Fleet Farm a superb site overlooking Chesil beach and the calm of the Fleet that runs alongside it. First day, a bus into Weymouth to explore the lovely beach and harbour. I used to come here as a kid and spent a happy holiday here. The front and harbour have ... read more

14. As we reach the final few weeks of our 10 week journey its time to wind our way through France, visiting friends and relatives and reflect on our wonderful trip. So lucky are we to have friends and family who have fabulous places for us to visit in France. We spent some vey hot days chilling with my sister and beau-frere just North of Bordeaux. Spent a lovely jazz evening at Montangne-sur Gironde, and enjoyed a karoke in their nearby town. When the weather changed we were able to visit the unique and extraordinary Chateaux Mercerie, and Chateau de Villebois Lavalette. About an hour North we met up and stayed with friends Chris and Gary. We helped them with a bit of extreme gardening then enjoyed a lovely BBQ party for Chris’s birthday, meeting many ... read more

It was great to catch up with our friends, Sue and Paul in Calella, share a meal and listen to Spanish music with Flamenco dancing. Surprisingly they were the first UK residents we had spoken to in 4 weeks so we had a lot to say! We camped a little way along the coast from our friends, in a delightful campsite. So much better than our last, with a great welcome from the staff, the guy who showed us to our pitch was a dead ringer for David Hasselhoff. The tents, caravan’s, motorhomes with their respective paraphernalia, washing lines, blow up lilos, etc, did give it a cramped feeling-but I suppose it was the peak of the summer holidays. The facilities though were top notch. Apart from swimming pool, kiddy pool it also had a separate ... read more

In our previous travels people we have met from Holland, have been good fun. They certainly travel more than many other Europeans we’ve met. Our next 2 campsites we visited were run by Dutch owners, they were to play a part in our long drive up Spain’s Mediterranean coast. Having abandoned Plan A visiting Cordoba, Granada and increasingly the likelihood that Barcelona would go the same way because of the heat. Enter Plan B, to travel and camp near the coast picking up, hopefully, more of the cool sea breeze. Our first hoped stop was Marbella, the holiday destination for the super-rich. I phoned the only campsite in the area know to us -no room. We then drive through hoping to park up, but every available inch of parking was used up. Driving further up the ... read more

We leave Seville and pick up the AP4. For many miles its a featureless dull road, not many towns or villages to pass through. We had seen the sign for Cadiz, the city I remember from history lessons for many famous battles. It could have been a great place to stop, but judging by the lack of campsites it wasn’t, so we pressed on. We were heading for the Rock of Gibraltar, situated at the pinch point between Europe and North Africa, where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic. It has been fought over for many centuries. It has been a British protectorate longer than America has been independent. It is 3 miles long and ¾ mile wide, the third smallest country after the Vatican and Monaco. With 32,000 inhabitants that had voted to remain British citizens ... read more

Travelling back into Spain, although I bemoaned that Portugal did not say ‘hello’ when we drove in it certainly said goodbye and thank you for visiting! We’d loved our travels there. Seville was next on our agenda, we were rather dubious because of the heat, but it was less than 2 hours driving, and right on our route so we dived in. At times our travelling may seem glamourous with all the sights we are so fortunate to see, but travelling by camper is certainly tricky when visiting cities. We’d found a safe secure parking place with good bus access to the city...fab! downside was it was basically a warehouse. We were persuaded to camp inside due to severe heat, but boy was it hot in there! Not wanting to sit in a car park, we ... read more

Its always exciting when driving off to new location. Leaving Lisbon it was extra exciting as we would be driving over the Vasco de Gama bridge, 7.6miles long with 2 elevated sections for vessels to pass under. Later we would meet a Portuguese man, (who incidentally works and lives in Luton, who said when it opened in 1998 15,000 people had a street party on it, with tables joined end to end over the whole length of the bridge! It was time again for a bit R+R again. So we headed for a campsite inland that was situated on the edge of a reservoir and was as close to nature as you could get. The receptionist said you could pick your own spot as long as you are 10 metres apart. Well, we could have had ... read more

Arriving in Lisbon, the cicadas are singling merrily indicating it’s getting hotter! and we are looking forward to a dip in the beautiful campsite pool. However, relaxing at the campsite was a challenge, there are hoards of children, primary school aged, seemingly in summer schools, identified by different coloured hats. They are everywhere, including over 100 in our campsite pool! Tram 28 featured highly in the guidebook and social media as the ‘best way to experience Lisbon’. We arrived via bus from our campsite, duly bought our public transport tickets and headed to the recommended start of the tram route, only to find over 100 people queuing! The trams are delightful vintage stock, but they only take around 20-30 people at a time and run every 15-20 mins. Plan B -walk the tram route, its only ... read more

We leave our perfectly located, but postage sized car park late in the afternoon intended to park around the bay, in Canidelo, but it is a popular resort and the two campsites were full. We headed south for 30 minutes to the Municipal Campsite at Espinho, another average looking campsite, at least it had a pool. The campsite was a poor reflection of the town of Esphino. It had a wide modern promenade with many cafes. For the sporty people, a sign that displayed the towns name - was also a climbing wall. There were many beach volleyball courts and a large open air swimming pool, with 3 high diving boards that look like 3, 5,and eight metres. I’ve dived of high boards but what scared the bejesus out of me, was from the 5mtr to ... read more

Our first sight of Porto was early evening, bustling crowds crossing Ponte Luis (bridge) on two levels, alongside cars and trams, and a funicular railway lifted you to further heights, whilst cable cars traversed the Vila Nova de Gaia bank. Colourful houses piled high above each other, intertwined by cobbled streets. It was delightful. Music came from all directions, the bars and many street entertainers, soft, sultry, jazzy sounds, and not a bad voice to be heard. In the evening the crowds gather across the river to watch the sun going down, quite an event, there must have been several hundred people on a hill, listening to music and applauding the sunset. Our campsite for the night was certainly not so romantic, a tiny car park. We got in with the help of a guy named ... read more
