Thursday 25 th April, BroomeRAC Cable Beach Caravan ParkCost $41.62 per night with membershipRated by us 8/10Mileage 17707 travelled 0After our relaxing few days we were up at 4.30am to attend the Anzac Day dawn service here in Broome. The war memorial is in the park which we looked over from our hotel when we first came to Broome for a week in 2012, the first holiday Graeme and I had together. The service was great and it was so good to see families involved. The local primary schools all supplied half a dozen kids and they sang the Australian National Anthem, it was touching to hear. The local Broome Band a new innovation in town also played the music, I noticed no one was brave enough to take on the Lay Post ... read more

Friday 26th April, Mary PoolMary Pool Rest AreaFreeRated by us 8/10Mileage 18484 travelled 777kms includes travel in BroomeTime to move on heading towards Kununurra, via a free camp for the night. WE have been advised by the tourist board to avoid Halls Creek and Fitzroy Crossing as the crime and theft is horrendous, so we have picked Mary Pool one of the four sites recommended by the tourist board, it is 108km short of Halls Creek and will enable us to make Kununurra tomorrow. The scenery is changing again as we move from the Pilbarra red earth to the browner dirt of the Kimberley. The first of many Boab Trees start to appear along with more water in the creeks and rivers. The termite mounds are now brown as opposed to red and there seem to ... read more

Everyone was up and packed and off early, it is juts 24hour rest stop, so we expected it would be the case.Driving through Halls Creek again it was a sad state of affairs we didn't stop but the place looked very run down. This would have to be the most amazing scenery we have see so far I took 167 photos as the road wound around into the hills and gorges of The Kimberley, it is a magic part of the country we are so blessed to be able to see all of this. I again took my turn at driving, I find the road ... read more

Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Clare April 27th 2024

So today we’ll be heading west into South Australia and on to the wine valley town of Clare. Compared to yesterday it’s going to be a relatively relaxed drive of only a tad over four hundred kilometres. We stop to stretch our legs at the thriving South Australian Riverland town of Renmark, best known for its prolific production of irrigated oranges and grapes. The ANZAC Day memorials set up along the attractive riverfront include thousands of crocheted red and purple poppies. It seems the purple ones are intended to recognise the “sacrifices” made by the animals that got drawn into the various conflicts. We read that it’s estimated that eight million animals lost their lives in World War I alone - horses, donkeys, dogs ….. and pigeons. I’d always thought of a “sacrifice” as being voluntary; ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Mildura April 26th 2024

We seem to have spent a lot of time traversing the globe over the past few years, and we’ve often been quizzed on our impressions of the empty arid centre of our wide brown homeland. And our response? Um, ahh … well we’ve never actually been there, which has always felt just a tad embarrassing. So we’ve decided it’s time to put that little wrong right - a three week and six thousand odd kilometre road trip up into our Red Centre. That feels like it’s going to be an awful lot of driving, but if that’s what it takes …. And today’s first step to get us in the mood, well that would be a lazy five hundred and fifty kilometres from Melbourne up to Mildura in the far north west of Victoria on the ... read more

Ich ... read more

Saturday 20 th April, BroomeRAC Cable Beach Caravan ParkCost $41.62 per night with membershipRated by us 8/10Mileage 17707 travelled 0Excitement is growing for tomorrow so a quiet preparation day today doing not a lot.Set out to sit on the grass at Cable Beach House to have a coffee and watch the world for a while. It is a beautiful spot with lots of grass and an amazing view over the ocean all in the shade of the palm trees. We had both become somewhat distracted and Tippy managed to run off after another dog, I have never seen him be so vicious, I think the other dog had wandered towards us and he was protecting us. The other owner was not very nice despite his dog slipping out of its collar and giving as good ... read more

Thursday 18 th April, BroomeRAC Cable Beach Caravan ParkCost $41.62 per night with membershipRated by us 8/10Mileage 17707 travelled 0Trip of the morning is out to Gantheaume Point an amazing beach onto which you can easily drive. The water is crystal clear and shallow with low waves rolling it, shame about the stingers it looks so inviting. It is safe to swim from May to October but we have been warned it is a bot early yet and the stingers are still about. We still had a good walk along they beach and I spent some time photographing the amazing rock formations. I used to know this rock as Zebra Rock in South Africa, I have never seen it in Australia till today, it is fascinating and full of colours, great for the ... read more
