This weekend was much more relaxing then the past weekend. Saturday Jessica and I decided to hike up Mt Gubongsan. The mountain was out in a suburb area of Daejeon. This meant that we had to venture on to the bus for the first time ever. We were very unsure of what to do or how to pay but thankfully it was very easy. The bus driver also helped us with where we had to get off in order to get to the mountain. It is a gorgeous hike. You are right in the trees and it is not as commercialized as other mountains I have seen. There are different routes up so you have your choice of using the stairs to hike it up on the man-made trails and rocky sides. That is the way we took up and it made for a great hike. At the top by stop 3 there is the temple and we sat up there and enjoyed the view for some time. At the top this old man kept trying to get his grandson to speak English to me but the poor child was horrified. I felt very bad for the child. On another note,
what I don’t understand is how at the top of this mountain you find a ‘restaurant’ that this man has called the sky lounge. How in the world to he get the tables, umbrellas, coolers and all his equipment up there. That will always be a mystery to me. On the way down there was the funniest couple ever in front of us. They provided me with free entertainment. I don’t understand why they did half of the stuff that they did. At the bottom of the mountain there are many little farms as you are on the outskirts of Daejeon. We saw many trees growing perisommes, green onions, red chillies, cabbage among other things. The farms here are so much different as they are rather tiny and shoved together. Very neat to see!
On the bus we decided to get off at one of the stops as curiosity got the best of me and I had to know what all the umbrellas were for. We found a huge indoor market selling meat, produce and other items. There seemed to be many quilt stores in there. What we were unsure of was the set up of this stands. You
will have fresh produce and then behind it is a quilt store and to the right is a meat stand and then to the left is a shoe store. Everything is crammed in there and they do not seem concerned with cross contamination. Some areas smelled delish and other areas horrid. We decided to pick up some oranges as they were a great bargain and they are amazing. We then walked all the way back to a subway stop and this was a far walk. On the way we just looked at all the stores and different things as we were not in this area before. I almost like the suburb areas more as they are not near as busy and feel more like home. You see the kids riding their bikes and the stores are not so crammed together. As well way less people.
On the subway we decided that we would treat ourselves to a ‘thanksgiving’ dinner which ended up being fried chicken and pizza at this pub restaurant. It was definitely no turkey and stuffing but still very good. There was no pizza sauce on the pizza though which made it not as good as it
could be. From there we walked to Rodeo Town and around that area. I was very excited to have found two snowboarding stores. This was the highlight of this trip. They have all the brands I love burton, forum, dc and so on AND they are cheaper then back home. I even saw my coat, gloves and jacket in the store. I looked at all the boards and equipment and all it made me want to do was go boarding. Soon though, soon. By this point it was a long day so we decided to call it a night and went home. I finally was able to watch G.I. Joe (very good movie by the way) and then skyped with the whole family : )
Sunday was my day to relax and get caught up on stuff. I have not had a sleep in day in ages and it felt great to not have anywhere to go. Lesson planning, laundry, cleaning, trip planning and a trip to get some groceries was my day and I loved it! This month Jessica and I have another attempt to go the zoo planned, hopefully we don’t get lost again! It is also
the international hot air balloon fiesta and then a trip to the limestone caves and the DMZ planned. Lots to see!
Miss everyone and happy thanksgiving!!
