Smashing down on the snooze button of my alarm for the third time a row I clumisly fumbled around for my phone. I had began the night before filling my stomach with semi-exquisit buffet food and ended my night around 5am sharing a beer with M.J. outside of a G.S. downtown (this has seemed to become our usual M.O. when she hang out). And now less than 4 hours since I layed my head down to sleep I had seemed to acquire a most unfortunate allergy to showing up to work on time. After calling my manager, I managed to struggle my way out of bed and into work just ten minutes into my first class, which was a mean hour later than I was supposed to arrive.
The day itself flew by and the festivities of Mud Fest Eve began with a bang. We took Jonny out for dinner and drinks in honor of his fast approaching, premature departure from Korea and the night quickly become a drunken emotional blur.
Saturday mornin was another battle with the alarm clockand with a little effort I was in a cab with a driver who had possibly seen one too
many car chase videos being that he got us downtown in under ten minutes (the ride usually takes close to a half hour). The 5 hour train ride began miserably with me losing my cool over not having any food and all the vending machines at the station being broken. However things quickly looked up aside from their being an unbelievable absense of bottled water on the train itself. Katie and I were smacking our lips most of the way suffering from a post alcohol induced dehydration.
Arriving in Boryeong we check into the motel, a quiant, near beach accomidation that featured a room full of yo's (korean style floor beds) and in no time we were off to the main event. We grabbed a quick lunch at the Lotteria, which would prove to be the first of three meals I'd have that day at the same fast food joint.
We then trekked down to the ocean, which from a distance looked rather picturesk, but when witness upclose, resembled more closely, a sess pool at a landfill or perhaps even more apt, a beach in New Jersey. Needless to say I spent almost no time in the water
during the sober hours of the day.
As a sort of side note, this beach in Boryeong has some of the most incredible tides I have ever seen, in the matter of an hour the water had some in nearly 50 feet. We soon retreated to the stage area to check out the scene. After jamming out to a kick ass cover band - which by seemingly divine province played 'Johnny be Good' as one of their final songs left me feeling all sentimental about my good leaving in less than 24 hours.
Oh I forgot to mention that at this point Busan Dan and I were covered from head to toe in mud... Oh and I also just realized I forgot to mention that I had run into Busan Dan and his buddy Adam over the course of several beer runs. Also this time I had managed to lose most of the group I had arrived with.
For the rest of the day I basically hung out with Dan, Adam and Katie. We grabbed beers, dinner, more beers, fireworks, dodged the cops (apparently lighting fireworks off on the beach is the only thing illegal in Boryeong),
we even rented scooters to tour the town. The scooters would have been cool but the guy selling them decided Dan was too drunk to drive and then ontop of it they ended up dieing in like 45 minutes anyway. But still it was pretty cool rolling around the town.
The next morning I woke up early, writhing in sunburn. I searched high and low for aloe to absolutely no avail. It was Jonny's last morning so everyone was a bit somber. The whole atmosphere was offset by a hotel employee who I think was on the payroll just to be a dirty old man and he ended up sizing up all the females in the group and attempted to point out their flaws. He reminded me of a drunken clown that causes children to fear carnivals for the rest of their lives. Anyway long story short we said our heart felt goodbyes, Michelle cried, everyone exchanged life advice and Jonny was off just like that. The whole thing was surreal. I decided to deal by drinking beers as I toured the town doing all the touristy stuff I had missed the day before.
The train ride home
was actually pretty nice, Katie and I got first class on the second and ended up spending most of the time in the dining car, I felt like I was in some old film. Before I knew it I was back in Chilgok at Jonny's old apartment introducing myself to his replacement. It's a strange circle of life here.
Well anyway enjoy the pictures! As always life is been pretty crazy but I wouldn't live it any other way.
