Hi all, My last blog saw us waiting to flag down a coach to Cebu City from Oslob. Well, this soon happened and after about 5 hours we were back and a short taxi ride took us the 'Beds and Friends' hotel close by the airport with free transfer bus for our early check-in tomorrow morning. We were a bit anxious about this place largely becaise of its name. Was it a euphemism for a knocking shop? Would we enter our room to find a 'friend' tucked up in bed waiting for us? Well, we needn't have worried. In fact it was one of the best places we stayed at in terms of being clean, modern and functional with rooftop pool to boot. There was even a friendly stray cat which had 3 tiny kitties hidden ... read more

We returned to Manila from San Fernando on a surprisingly quick and easy bus . Bizarrely, it was quicker than the taxi we took on the outbound journey and ridicuolously cheap too. On arrival, we transfered to our Airbnb apartment next to Terminal 3 and settled in to watch Netflix and grab an early night before our flight to Cebu the following day. When the following day came, everything went like clockwork and we landed at 10.30am. Having been stung once by an expensive taxi, we were determined this time to cross the island by bus and it couldn't have been easier although i made the mistake of choosing the back seat which magnified every bump and pothole that we came across on this 4 hour journey. Moalboal was our destination and we arrived outside a ... read more

We arrived in San Fernando after leaving Port Barton in Palawan via a joiners van trip followed by a domestic flight & finally an airport taxi from Manila which, even though I got a 50% reduction in price, was still horrendously expensive (yeah, I know - we should have tried the coach station but it was getting late on Maundy Thursday and we had to get there at reasonable hour in order to settle in and find somewhere decent to eat) The next day, on Good Friday itself, we discovered that much had changed since the other blogs about these crucifixions had been written. There is no free VIP ticket anymore. These tickets are now $100 each and had sold out 2 weeks ago. We were thus denied access to the VIP tent & faced a ... read more

3 glorious days already on Cacnipa and a 4th one approaching. It all sounded perfect so where did it all go wrong? Tbh, this potential 4th day was always a high risk proposition as we needed to be at Puerto Princesa airport by 1.30pm on day 5 which meant crossing the sea back to Port Barton in the morning of the flight (what if the sea conditions proved too rough?). Then once back at PB we needed to get a shared minivan & they only leave when full and only at set times. We would be extremely lucky to get to PB in time for the 8am minivan so that meant we'd take the 10am and the minivan timetable says to allow 3-4 hours even though the outbound journey only took just over 2 hours. Anyway, ... read more

Happy Easter from the Philippines everyone! So, after having a hospital operation postponed for the 2nd time, I decided there was no point sitting at home worrying so here I am backpacking around the Philippines and what a chilled place to be - a million miles away from the worry. However, visiting the Philippines in Holy Week is a bit like going to Wembley on Cup Final day so it was a top priority to try and escape the crowds and discover the tropical seclusion expected from island hopping. It would also help me recharge my batteries for the potentially dark days ahead. The resultant journey was lengthy to say the least - not helped at all by Cathay Pacific texting me on the day of our outbound flight from London to say that our flight ... read more

Tour Day 141, Cruise Day 39 – There were no appealing shore excursions in Boracay, Philippines; however, I was planning to tender to shore and mosey around the dock area for a spell. Those plans were scuttled by a) a cautionary flier distributed to each cabin that warned of the precarious condition of the steps at the tender dock, and b) by the captain’s warning issued over the ship intercom about the rough seas and the increased challenges of transferring both to and from the tender to the tender docks. Four opportunities to incur additional injury to either wing! Not a prudent move, so I opted to stay on the ship. Tour Day 140, Cruise Day 38 – Manila, Philippines – Author’s Note: José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda ((1861–1896) is considered a Philippine national hero for advocating political reforms for the colony under Spanish rule. His writings inspired the Philippine Revolution, and he was executed by the Spanish colonial government for the crime of rebellion. “Best of Manila: Past & Present” Shore Excursion – Discover Manila, the Philippines' capital city and premier gateway to the country. Your tour begins with a trip through the Makati area, the financial and commercial center of Manila. The first stop is at the American Memorial Cemetery, the largest and perhaps the most beautiful outside continental United States. Pass through the plush residential village of Forbes Park dubbed Millionaire's Row, and continue your drive down Roxas Boulevard by the fabled ... read more

The shanties of Cebu City are nothing more than crates stacked on top of each other, waiting for the next typhoon to sweep them away. There are no sidewalks. Exhaust-blackened storefronts offer junk for sale. Tattered laundry flaps from second-floor windows. Stray dogs lie in the middle of the road. Children play among piles of unused construction material—broken cinder blocks, rusted pipes, fragments of corrugated sheets-- covered in weeds. Dark narrow alleys reach back into the slum as far as I can see; as far as I dare to see. We are in an air-conditioned van, stuck in rush-hour traffic, inching our way to Shangri La, a generic resort surrounded by barbed wire and armed guards. I wondered about the wisdom of bringing my granddaughters—Vivienne (12) and Bella (5)-- to the Philippines for their first big ... read more

Well, here I am in Palawan for an inaugural visit after all these years, it truly is a dream come true. This marvelous destination is one of the most sought-after places to visit in the world, and I'm absolutely thrilled to be here. Although it is considered a remote destination in the Philippines, Palawan is only 90 minutes flight time from Cebu with most flights going direct to Puerto Princesa. The capital of the province is in the south of the main island, and after arriving safely I advised some locals I needed transport to Port Barton, my first scheduled stop on the island. A local took me to a bus shelter, where I waited with a pair of Spanish girls who were also heading out. There was some fiddling around, then driving around town a ... read more

The island hopping adventures have kicked in to full gear, as I continue my travels in the wonderful Philippines. Soon after arriving in the islands, a lot of the talk has been about Siargao. To be honest, I had never heard of the island but it seems to be the happening spot now for travellers and locals alike. Well, this mysterious island will remain a mystery no more as I flew in from Cebu for a week's stay. All of the reviews online were raving about a particular hostel, and although a little way off the main road and requiring some off road motorbiking, Hiraya Surf hostel proved to be one of the most enjoyable places I have stayed in anywhere in the world. There was the initial shock after checking in to find I was ... read more
