Up and out this morning by 8:00 with a quick stop at the Walmart up the road. Several items were missing from our on line pick up order and we thought we'd pick them up while we had the chance. The one thing we have all noticed is just how friendly everyone is in this section of the country. They will go out of their way to help you in any way they can, really nice, just like home...not.
We have been in touch with the Great Alaska Spring Adventure group and everyone is concerned with the fires that are active in the British Columbia area. Our original plan was to head to Dawson Creek from Jasper to pick up the Alaskan Highway (Alcan), but if things don't change, we will head West and pick up the Cassier Highway which is on the West side of BC. We will then pick up the Alcan at Watson Lake on the border of British Columbia and the Yukon. It really will not be a big deal as both ways are scenic.
After leaving Spearfish this morning we hit rain in Wyoming, occasionally heavy, but not bad. There wasn't much to see
during this stretch, so not a problem. We stopped in Buffalo, WY to gas up (by the way, prices going up, $3.39), and have lunch by the road side. We then proceeded onto Big Horn National forest. It was your typical scenic mountain road, lots of climbing, curves, then steep descents. The weather varied according to the altitude. First light rain, changing to sleet, then snow. The amount of snow also changed as well, the higher we went. At one point, we were in white-out conditions, on a steep mountain road. It was an unbelievably beautiful drive, nerve racking, but beautiful.. Now on to Cody. The GPS then took us to a road that was a shorter route. It was through farmland, cattle ranches and it even had a warning to watch for cows on the road. I'm losing faith in this GPS. The road brought us back to the main highway to a town called Menderson, Population 88. We then saw black clouds gathering in the distance coming our way. The skies opened up and it poured like the dickens. Thankfully, it moved away from us, but it did a good job of cleaning the bugs off the RV's..
We finally arrived in Cody and went directly to Buffalo Bill's Center of the West, a museum dedicated to the west . The museum also has a collection of just about every firearm ever manufactured. There is a Ruger Firearms Exhibition that Tom was very interested in seeing. Tom's Dad, Stan, was a vice president for Ruger from their early days. He was responsible for developing a investment casting process for Ruger that produced a quicker, and less costly method for manufacturing their firearms. He has always wanted to see it, and we were glad that he was able to.
Mileage to date: 1043
Animal Sightings: Numerous deer (all alive), sheep, cattle, horses, dead jack rabbit, goats, and a partridge in a pear tree.
