We got up early as we wanted to be ready as soon as the boat docked. We had an all day private tour scheduled. As soon as we got the “you could go to shore signal”, we left. Our driver was outside the gate with a sign with my name of it. The car was a van and was very spacious and our guide was great. He drove us from Invergordon, where our ship docked through small villages and our first stop was to see the long hair cows common in the area. These 2 where named after Outlander characters. Our next stop was Beauly Priory where Claire, from Outlander, picked herbs. Unfortunately, it was under renovation to shore up the structure and that won’t be completed until June. We then walked around the town square ... read more

Inverness has a ton of lodging options and I chose to stay at Bannerman B&B. Are there closer hotels to the city center and train station? Yes. Do they have a Rupert? Probably not. If you don't mind walking 20 minutes this is the place to stay. Alison greeted me warmly and even carried my suitcase up the stairs to my room! I was given the Snug Room, which has a comfortable bed, attached bathroom with a small shower stall, a vanity table and a tiny fridge. On top of the fridge was an electric tea kettle, bottle of water, teapot, mug, glass, tea, instant coffee, sugar and even a teacake! In the fridge was a bottle of milk. The windows opened and it was nice to let in some fresh air every night for a ... read more

Today I said goodbye to Edinburgh and took the train up to Inverness. When I looked at the train schedule, I saw I could get on at Haymarket but I thought it would be better to walk up to Waverly to ensure a window seat. Luckily the rain stopped and held off for my walk! There was a break in the clouds and the sun was shining on the castle as I walked along Princes Street. Waverly is a fairly large train station with plenty of signage to help you find your way. The ticket counter lady was very helpful and I was able to buy a return ticket as I will be passing through here again on Friday. Buying a return and then another ticket to my next destination worked out to be cheaper than ... read more

Today Renata and I set out on a Best of the Highlands tour with Expedia Cruises. Beauly Priory The First stop was Beauly Priory. Beauly Priory was an interesting historical ruin and was used as a filming location for the hit TV show Outlander in which Renata and I are fans. The main character, Claire, meets the seer Maisri here. Urquhart Castle The next stop after the Priory was Urquhart Castle. Urquhart Castle is a ruined castle that sits beside Loch Ness. It was an interesting place with various hidden areas to explore. I would have liked more time exploring the castle but alas we needed to go searching for the Loch Ness monster on our cruise around Loch Ness. We were unfortunately unable to find the Loch Ness Monster. I think he was shy from ... read more

On August 20 we left Edinburgh for Dundee and points beyond. The largest draw for Dundee was the new Victoria & Albert Museum, an extension of the one in London. It is an amazing piece of architecture, two upside down pyramids of horizontal bands that spiral up and join together. It is on the waterfront next to the ship Discovery, a barque-rigged auxiliary steamship built for Antarctic research. Launched in 1901, she was the last traditional wooden three-masted ship to be built in the United Kingdom. Our next stop was Scone (pronounced scoon) Palace, near the city of Perth. It is an historic house by the village of Scone. Built in red sandstone with a castellated roof, it is an example of the Gothic Revival style in Scotland. The interior part that we were allowed to ... read more

Sunday, 24 July 2022, Day 7 Great Glen Way. Drumnadrochit to Inverness starting at Blackfold meadow again. by All Trails app: 11.6 miles, 4:39 hours, 344 feet elevation gain. By Garmin: 11.64 miles, 4:38 hours, 234 feet elevation gain The morning looked very clear after some heavy rains during the night. Our transfer van picked us up at 0930 for the ride back up to the hill to Blackfold. We started at the same spot as yesterday but went in the opposite direction towards Inverness instead of back to Drumnadrochit. Yesterday was supposed to be 12 miles but it was only 8. Today is supposed to be 9 miles but was actually 11.6. So much for the guidance from the tour operators. Loch Ness Travel provided our shuttle and also was providing our luggage transfer. After breakfast, again at the Isle of Skye Baking Co., we headed back to the mainland on our way to Loch Ness. Rain and heavy traffic slowed us down and we arrived at Urquhart Castle after 11:30, so we decided to come back to it after our cruise on Loch Ness. It turned out we could upgrade our cruise tickets to include a stop at the castle for less than the price we would have had to pay to see the castle. It drizzled a bit as we began our cruise, but cleared shortly after getting underway. We even enjoyed seeing a rainbow as we neared the castle. The castle dates back to 1509 and is now just ruins, but still picturesque. Loch Ness is beautiful. Nessie, however, did not show. After cruising back to our ... read more

After yesterday’s lunch we were not about to chance breakfast with the hotel cooks, so Tom went out hunting and gathering. He did awesomely well because he brought back an orange juice, some berry flavoured porridge, a cheesy bacon flatbread and a latte! Thank you McDonalds! After brekky we went next door to board our train to the Kyle of Lochalsh. That’s where the train was going and where we had seats booked and selected for but we were getting off at Plockton. So after two and a half hours of travelling through little Scottish villages, request stations (where you have to ask the conductor to stop the train), heather covered hills, wide open moors and alongside lochs, we alighted at Plockton station and enjoyed a leisurely 1 km stroll into the village, giving us a ... read more

What a day of contrasts! Our hotel in Glasgow, right next to the railway station has such good wifi! We wandered downstairs and found that the brasserie for breakfast that I’d researched is part of our hotel! After a lovely hot buffet breakfast we packed up and headed to the station to catch our train for our 3 1/2 hour trip to Inverness. The train was just a local train with people alighting and joining all along the way. There were some men on their way to Inverness to watch a soccer game - they started on their ales and drank and chatted (getting louder and louder) all along the way. We were chatting to a man who works for Wendy Wu. Wendy Wu tours started in Sydney but HQ is now London. The scenery along ... read more

Days 26 and 27 - To Scotland, by Train and Car Our train to Edinburgh left a little after noon so we had time to relax in the morning, get packed up and make our way to the station. We decided to try a place claiming to have authentic mexican burritos and check out their claims. While the burritos were fine, they didn’t have quite the same flavor of home, definitely a European twist on burritos. We opted for First Class tickets of this train since it was over 3 hours and not too much more expensive. This meant we got to wait in the First Class lounge instead of the noisy, crowded, unairconditioned station, a real bonus. They also had free snacks and drinks and comfy chairs. Once on the train they fed us lunch ... read more
