We have embarked on two previous adventures, a European adventure, that took us through 23 countries across Europe in our trusty Bongo, and a 6 month backpacking adventure around the world. This time we are retired so the World is our lobster!

We both suffer from a 'wanderlust' alway's wondering what is over the next hill or around the next cove.

We are writing this blog so we can keep in contact with our family and friends, to let them know what we are up to.

Europe » France » Rhône-Alpes » Chamonix-Mont-Blanc May 27th 2024

Due to a rush to get away, also probably the changeable weather, it’s been difficult getting into our usual traveller’s stride. But we are moving further south, the weathers warmer and we are heading towards the French Alps. The French motorways are great, you pay the tolls- but they are great!, smooth roads and plenty of places to rest. Often you see brown signs with images applicable to a nearby towns fame, whether it might show a monument of someone famous, maybe the region might be popular for its produce or maybe artistry. It makes us think should we be stopping here? to take a look or perhaps sample the wares, but as we always say, we cant do it all-as much as we try. We are heading for Chamonix the popular Ski resort and home ... read more

Europe » France » Burgundy » Beaune May 21st 2024

Heading for the beautiful medieval towns of Burgundy we attempted to visit the medieval town of Troyes but were thwarted by road works, as they stopped us from parking. It looks a nice town, maybe next visit! We camped in the beautiful little village of Mersault, in the heart of the vineyards. We’d camped here about 13 years ago it has now developed into a ‘Huttopia’, having many small huts to rent, and only a small camp site. They did however have fabulous views, a gorgeous, heated outdoor swimming pool and the best croissants we have tasted on this trip so far! In the nearby town of Beaune we were able to park for free in a camping aire right in the middle of the town. We spent a lovely morning walking the medieval ramparts surrounding ... read more

Europe » France » Champagne-Ardenne » Reims May 19th 2024

We headed south to Epernay, the self proclaimed ‘capitale du champagne’. Epernay is full of the huge champagne houses, Moet and Chandon, Mercier, Chateaux Perrier etc, all along the aptly named Avenue de Champagne. Perhaps it was the lack of sanitary facilities at the campsite (they were being refurbished), or the unsettled weather, or the 30-minute walk to the town, but we found Epernay pleasant but not inspiring. I particularly wanted to visit the city of Reims, not very accessible to campervans, so we caught the train from Epernay. It was around a half hour trip mainly through vineyards, the sun was shining, and we had a lovely day exploring Reims. An interesting city, with wide boulevards, lots of cafes and also lots of stag and hen parties! Must be the ‘in’ place to go, and ... read more

Europe » France » Picardy » Peronne May 17th 2024

We had a somber and sober start to our 2024 trip to Europe with a stop in the French town of Peronne. This area is one of main areas in the Battle of the Somme, the bloodiest battle in British Military history. After our whirlwind trip through Portugal and Spain last year we were determined to slow down on this year’s trip. After a brief stop overnighting in the quaint St Margaret's bay, that seems to have been trapped in time, but perfect for ferry watching being next door to Dover. We jump on the Isle of Inishmore, the cosy but empty Irish Ferry that took us to Calais. I had planned to aim for Reims in the heart of the Champagne growing area, but Ali quite rightly said there was a nice campsite a couple ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » Scotland » Inverness-shire » Isle of Skye November 7th 2023

Picture perfect Plockton, a beautiful village we decided to stop at on our way to the Isle of Skye. We’d found Plockton by chance a few years ago, it sits on the banks of Loch Carron and I can’t imagine a more perfect view. Unsurprisingly it has been the setting for the series Hamish Macbeth, and some scenes in the film The Wicker Man. On the far side of the bay sits Duncraig Castle, having an unusual history told in part in by a BBC documentary in 2002 when 17 family members moved in together and set about renovating it, apparently there were lots of disputes! Currently the castle is in private ownership, but it still has its own train station! Heading on around the coast we arrive at the Kyle of Lochalsh, and the bridge ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » Scotland » Ross and Cromarty » Gairloch November 1st 2023

Even though we are approaching deepest winter with autumn gales kicking in, and campsites closing. We are amazed to see so many visitors from abroad, either in their own vans or hiring them. Following an early morning walk along Dunnet Beach we head west towards the other major town in Caithness, Thurso. It seems to fair better than Wick does. We just had a drive around the town, also a glimpse of the most northerly railway station. (Just two trains a day) then had a look at delightfully named place Scrabster you can catch a ferry to the Orkneys. We hope to do this sometime in the future. On this northern coast we are more protected from the easterly winds that have been buffeting us so far. We pass the Castle of Mey, a fortified house ... read more

We’re on the NC500! a route we’ve been wanting to take for some time, the glorious coast of the wild Highlands. Launched in 2015 by North Highland Tourism, it was intended to be Scotland’s route 66, bringing much needed income to businesses in the remote Highlands. A circular route, north of Inverness. All seemed to be well until ‘lockdown’ and staycations of 2020/21, causing a huge increase in campervans and motorhomes driving the route. We were aware there had been some bad press about motorhomes undertaking the NC500, poor thoughtless driving and camping, making for some really fed-up locals. However, we only found fabulous scenery and friendly people. Its quite a challenge heading into the Highlands at the end of October, most of the campsites are shut so it was a matter of negotiating some ‘off ... read more

Leaving Edinburgh, we cross the modern Queensferry bridge with its wonderful views of the Forth. Most of this trip around Scotland will be sticking along the Coast. Turning onto the A92, soon we directed to scenic coastal route that would take us along the Fife’s coast. Although a low-lying area, there are many pleasant villages and harbours to explore. One was Crail a pretty village with its small harbour and cobbled streets. Afters the storm of the last few days it was great to see the sunshine, the wind was still blowing making for wonderful seascapes. Our next stop was Saint Andrews. Famed for Scotland’s oldest University, where Prince Willam and Kate Middleton met, and of course the home of golf where there are some of the best courses in the world. Europe » United Kingdom » Scotland » Midlothian » Edinburgh October 21st 2023

Finally arrived in Edinburgh, a couple of weeks later than planned, just ahead of Storm Babet. Expecting the worst, we donned our macs and headed into the city. What a great city to explore, transport was plentiful, and I loved walking the Royal mile in old town. Its no wonder JK Rowling drew inspiration for Hogwarts here, with the turreted, dark stone architecture. It was a race to the castle as we were informed it would be closed tomorrow (due to the storm), we arrived just in time for the 1pm gun salute. The crowds gathered to see a man in uniform light an old WW2 Field gun, which was a little disappointing as I was expecting a cannon! We queued to see the Honours of Scotland (crown jewels) which were impressive, but most atmospheric was ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Dorset » Weymouth October 13th 2023

We are back at base, we were due to head straight to Scotland, to include the North Coast 500 - as the name suggest a trip around the coast of the Highlands. First though we need to have some work to alter the Air Suspension that we had fitted, unfortunately this was on the south coast. But every cloud has a silver lining, and we used the available time to head to one of my favourite parts of the country, Dorset. We based ourselves at East Fleet Farm a superb site overlooking Chesil beach and the calm of the Fleet that runs alongside it. First day, a bus into Weymouth to explore the lovely beach and harbour. I used to come here as a kid and spent a happy holiday here. The front and harbour have ... read more
