I love to travel and to read other people's blogs of their trips and I've discovered that I enjoy writing about my travels. It helps me to remember what I've seen and done, as much as I enjoy sharing my travels with others. I've traveled internationally to India, Costa Rica, Iceland, Germany, Poland, Israel, London, Rhodes, South Africa, Amsterdam, Brussels, Italy, India, Peru, Spain and Portugal. (oh, and I spent a day in Zurich waiting for a flight!) In the US I've been up and down the East Coast and California, and places in Washington, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, Ohio, Illinois, New Mexico, Louisiana and Texas (and probably some more states I can't remember at the moment.)

I'm back home. I've been home for 2 days and finally able to function enough to make a to do list and start unpacking. Finishing this blog is top on my 'to do' list. If this last post doesn't get out today, it never will. I did start it at some point so here's what I got... The night we left Belfast I couldn't sleep trying to decide what to do in Dublin. One last night spent with Rick to make a plan for the next day and half.. We made it to Dublin from Belfast with only a quick rest stop along the way. Don was in his element here and gave us the grand tour of Dublin. He's very proud of this city. We went to Phoenix Park for a drive by of the ... read more

We are in Northern Ireland. We came via a night in Donegal, that included a visit to Donegal Castle and some fun picture taking. We left Donegal first thing in the morning to go to Derry and the UK. Derry's a city I was really interested in experiencing and did that. Spent 2 hours on a walking tour with a survivor, Jimmy Toye, of Bloody Sunday. He relived that day, more than 50 years ago, moment by moment, taking us to the spot where the British soldiers stood when they fired at the young Irish protestors, and where each of his friends had fallen. It was very moving and intense, too much for some. I learned a lot...the connections with the civil rights movement in the 60s is a strong one. The civil rights issue here ... read more

When I told my friends that I would be traveling to Ireland, I got similar comments, "Ireland is green, greener and greenest. The people are friendly, friendlier, and friendliest people they have ever met." I must agree that their observations are extremely accurate. The scenery is stunning, and the people are kind, helpful and, yes, very friendly. I believe there is another trait. The places we have visited so far are tidy, tidier, and tidiest. There are not any wrappers, empty bottles, cigarette butts, or bits of trash on the streets or roads. When we made this observation to our driver he informed us that each town enters the 'tidiest town' contest. People take such pride in their towns and their reward is to be named 'The Tidiest Town.' Last year Abbeyleix in County Lapis won ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Clare » Cliffs of Moher May 23rd 2024

We left Killarney yesterday morning. Our next base... Galway for 2 nights. We had a lot of traveling to do before getting there. Visiting the Cliffs of Mohrer was the highlight and goal of the day. We crossed the Shannon River by ferry and drove along the Western coast to get there, traveling on a different coach for this leg of the trip. We did a short stop at Lehench Beach before arriving at the Cliffs. The weather was pretty good most of the way, some showers a couple of times, but this group was prepared for whatever the Cliffs weather brought with layers and rainwear. Arriving was a little confusing...you can walk up to the left...or right...and to this level or further..but the view was impressive, just like I imagined and had seen in movies ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Kerry » Killarney May 20th 2024

This part of the trip is all about the beauty of Ireland's southwest coast. Yesterday we spent a sunny and mostly warm day exploring the Ring of Kerry. The day started out with a cool mist covering everything but gradually that lifted We were on and off the bus for 8 hours. The Ring is a 135 mikes long peninsula jutting out from Killarney. It is surrounded by beaches, mountains and lakes. We drove along the beaches and through the mountains of the MacGullicuddy Reeks. We made some stops just to enjoy the views, and take pictures of course, and other stops to walk around small tourist towns, shop in the small stores, (Sneem for one) along the way, and take more pictures! And one to walk on and along the beach in Waterville, collected shells ... read more

I'm sitting in the hotel bar in Killarney listening to John O'Roardan sing Irish folk songs and thinking over the past 2 days. Yesterday we started the day meeting Ruti Lachs, a Jewish resident of Cork, who has done research on the Jewish community of the past. I had connected with her online and 30 emails later, 6 of us met her to hear stories, songs and see what was once Jewtown (called that in an affectionate way according to our guide) I'm not so sure about that. Jews from Lithuania settled here in the 1880s. We saw the building that was a shul, that closed in 2016 and is now a 7th day Adventist church and walked over the Passover bridge inaugurated by the Jewish mayor Jerrold Goldberg. Ruti sang a poem Tashlich on the ... read more

Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur July 23rd 2023

We took an Uber to the Gere Lyon train station in Paris to catch an 11:15 train to Nice. It was, of course, delayed. When it was finally called, there was a crowded mad dash to get to the track and into the train. The trip should have been 5+ hours but it was over 7. At one point there was a long delay because another train had hit an animal on the track??.At first we kept busy with sleeping and doing things on our tablets or phones but it dragged on. The highlight was the great picnic lunch we had brought along. And the French countryside was pretty. When we got closer to our destination the views of the beautiful blue water of the French Riviera helped. We arrived in Nice and eventually got the ... read more

Taking a break from talking about what I've seen and done to what I've eaten. With great cheeses and bread, how can you go wrong? Best meal so far...Pain Vin Fromage...a fondue restaurant in the Marias neighborhood : a beautiful cellar like setting with 2 different fondues, bread and potatoes...it was delicious and Kir Royal to wash it down. It was an adventure getting there with clogged roads that caused our Uber driver to tell us to get out and walk, while the others were traveling without wifi to get there. Fortunately the restaurant seated us even though we were an hour late and the meal was totally worth it. Tea in Cafe Lavierve was pretty yummy too. It was in an article in the New York Times '36 Hours in Paris' so Roberta wanted to ... read more

We've been busy these past 2 days in Paris taking the metro, ubering and of course walking a lot. We've had delicious meals and snacks and a few drinks. Paris is a beautiful city, with very crowded streets and roads. People we've met, especially asked questions of, were very friendly. Cafes seem always busy and people are sitting in them taking their time and enjoying. Terry and I had a plan for our time. While we wanted to relax and take it slow, the draw of things that Rick Steves said we should see, was strong. We had museum reservations each morning. On Wednesday it was the Orsay where we had a date with Rick and the Impressionists. It was beautiful...just seeing the highlights we spent a couple of hours with Monet, Renoir, and Van Gogh. ... read more

On a pretty last minute spontaneous decision I'm traveling to Paris and Nice with Terry, Roberta, Cheryl, and Naomi. Terry was feeling the need to take a trip this summer and as long as we found a good deal, I was in. After some time looking at Nova Scotia, we heard about the wild fires and couldn't find a good deal, somehow traveling to Paris became an option. Thanks to Travel zoo, which we'll never use again, and Terry's persistent negotiating skills we got the deal we were looking for. 8 days, really 6, air fare hotels and train all for $2000. Terry and I were never in France and the others had but liked the idea of taking the trip together. France was never high on my travel list but seeing the Eiffel Tower and ... read more
