The Anchorage Depot
Today we were heading to Seward to pick up our cruise ship. The train left at 6:45am. so we needed to be packed up and waiting for our taxi before 6am. The taxi arrived at 5:50am and we headed to the train depot. Unlike the other train trip, this one was crowded! There was a long line, out the door, and then weaving back and forth inside. We finally got our tickets and boarded the train. We were in Car C, seats 2 & 3. They weren't bad seats, but I wish we had the two in front of us, since those seats had a table. The car layout was similar to the trip from Fairbanks, except the cafeteria car in front of us had some balcony type seating, where you could sit and watch the scenery through larger windows, and eat or drink. We tried those out later in the trip.

Again, the scenery along the way was quite beautiful, with snow-covered mountains again, and this time the ocean. We both took a lot of photos, but I will only use a few of the best for the blog. The only animals we saw along the way were some

white sheep up on the mountains to our left. We didn't eat breakfast since we'd be in Seward by 11am, but a lot of other folks ate a lot of food, and more drinks.... the alcoholic type. I only had a couple cups of coffee. We sat in our seats some of the time, went back and up for the domed car viewing, and spent a little time in the cafeteria balcony. The train only made one stop along the way, at Girdwood, and wasn't side-tracked even once.

Right on time, at 11am, we pulled into Seward. The town is not very big, and mostly caters to the cruise ships. We knew how close our hotel, the Breeze Inn, was to the train depot, so we figured we'd walk the two blocks to the hotel. I noticed they had a van from Breeze Inn, but we were already on our way walking. Like I'd seen in the videos of the place, and on maps, there was was very little in this part of town but tour agencies, restaurants, souvenir shops, and of course hotels. We got to the hotel and waited our turn to check in. Remember, like I

said, there were a lot more people on this train, and it seemed a lot them were staying in Breeze Inn. When our turn came, we found out our room wasn't ready, and probably wouldn't be until after 2pm. Oh well, we could tour the town and eat lunch. We stowed our bags in the luggage room and headed out.

The hotel had told my wife about a good place to eat, strangely enough the Breeze Inn Restaurant. LOL After looking nearby, we decided to check it out. The prices weren't that bad, that had a decent table, and a decent menu. For probably the first time ever, we both decided on the same dish, a bowl of clam chowder. It was very good! After lunch, we wandered down the street, to check out the cruise ship(s) that were in port, and maybe go to Safeway, which was a ways down the road, past the cruise ship docks. By the time we passed the cruise ships, both of which were called something like Silver Seas, it was getting late, so we went back to the hotel to see if our room was ready. Our rooms weren't ready yet, so

we decided to sit in the lounge and wait.

The hotel finally let us know our room was ready, so we grabbed our bags and headed to our room, 112. Being on the first floor was nice, with no elevator, and views in front and back of the hotel. We unpacked, sort of, and went for another walk around town. A ways down the street we found a multi-store that had a lot of hardware, clothing, and several other categories of stuff. I'd decided I needed gloves and maybe a warm beanie hat. Sure enough, they had both, for about $10 each, so I bought one of each. We wandered down the road a bit more, but the stores sort of ran out, and there was just a road leading to the main town, so we turned around and headed back. This time we walked along the shore, mostly on boardwalks, checking out the tons of boats that were tied up here, besides of course the two cruise ships.

Afterwards, we returned to the room to relax. We watched a movie or two, then I took a nice hot bath and Manoli took a nice hot shower. The
