Wild animals
Is there risk of dangerous wild animals in the national parks? Looks a lovely part of the word.

South Africa, Wild Animals
Ah sorry, your comment was on one of my South Africa not California blogs - yes, lots of dangerous wild animals in South Africa's National Parks - lions, leopards, hippos, crocodiles, elephants, rhinos and then some!

Wild Animals
Indeed there is apparently - there were a number of signs to look out for cougars and bears, and what to do if they are encountered. This did make me a bit nervous on my hiking.

Big Sur
Fond memories of our drive in 1990 something .....

Big Sur
Ah, nice to hear my write-up brought back fond memories for you! :)

Captivating wildlife
The drive is great... even with a section washed out. It had been repaired at one time but guess I wasn't paying much attention and it washed out again. We always enjoy visiting the opulence of the Hearst Castle. We've been on a couple of different tours. I can't imagine having that much money... but I'd like to try. The grounds are like going on safari. Seeing a baby seal is precious. This coast has so much to offer. The Monterey aquarium is one of the best in our country. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I would pass on the house if I could have that swimming pool... it is grand!

Wildlife and Opulence
Sure enough, the Big Sur Highway lived up to my expectations! It was a grand drive, even if I wasn't able to see a large part due to the washed out road. Nice to hear you've done more than one tour at Hearst Castle, I imagine the upstairs must be very interesting too. And indeed, oh my goodness, that swimming pool...!! Thanks for reading and commenting, and see you soon :D

Inside Hearst Castle

Hearst Castle is truly spectacular
Hearst Castle is truly spectacular and very interesting. It is scary that much of the priceless artworks that decorate the interior of HC would have ended up on European dumps if Hears hadn't bought it and taken it to California. /Ake

Hearst Castle
Ah, that's interesting. I didn't know about the salvaging from European dumps that Hearst did - good man, I say!

Solvang

We also went to Solvang
I don't think we visited Santa Barbara when we travelled in California. But we sure visited Solvang. It is a bit touristy, but it was good fun going there. /Ake

Solvang
Thanks Ake. Yes, a good description - touristy, but good fun! And a bit of a surprise in the middle of coastal California!

What a range of experiences
What a great time you must have had at Universal Studios. I can't believe how many rides you managed to fit in, this must have been great fun. I am sure it compensated for the sad experience you had in Downtown LA. I can imagine this must have been scary and at the same time sad. I really feel for those who completely lose control of their lives and need to struggle every day in one of the richest countries in the world.

Experiences
Thanks for this Katha. Yes, that's a good point, that I don't think I appreciated at the time - how sad it is for these people's lives and where they have ended up. I loved Universal, and was definitely heading from ride to ride to fit everything in!

Hollywood
Oh wow, how much fun must it have been to follow the traces of famous movies, actors, and actresses! Great idea to put yourself into the mood for Hollywood by watching Charlie's Angels and Die Hard (I like sitting in the back of the plane, too, by the way). The tour seems to have been a lot of fun, although I can relate to the awkward feeling you had when you felt like stalking the celebrities.

Hollywood
Thanks for this Katha! I imagine we all have our own impressions of the world based on numerous productions coming out of Hollywood, it really is quite something to be in the magical place itself. Thanks for relating to the awkwardness of the tour, though of course I think it still has to be done, lol! Yes, the back of the plane is a good place to hide away on these long-haul journeys.

I'm so pleased that you were able to see the glories of California on this trip...
especially the whales!

The Long and winding Roads
You are seeing a lot of California. I'm sure you've enjoyed seeing the diversity of the California topography....mountains, beaches, deserts, farmland. Most people do not realize how much farmland California has. Can you imagine LA country in the 50's when it was covered in Orange Groves. I would have like to see that. We love those off the beaten track museums and hit them whenever we can. We've been to several of the Spanish Missions in CA and they are a delight. Some people do a road trip to see all of them. They are lovely. We also enjoyed a day trip to Solvang. We love staying in posh places from time to time. It is not our norm but when we do it, it is amazingly fun to enjoy the luxury. Your time in Santa Barbara and enjoying Easter mass was perfect for you. I'm sorry you lost your sunglasses.

Sunglasses
Thanks for this. I feel the losing of the sunglasses was a blessing in disguise, as it got me talking to the main priest of the Santa Barbara Mission, which I appreciated.

The Long and Winding Roads
Thanks Merry! This was a nice part of my Road Trip, it helped me up wind down a bit and enjoy some luxury there in Santa Barbara. Yes, I would have loved to have seen the orange groves of LA County. The Missions I visited were pretty special, and it was great to have tied Santa Barbara's in with Easter Sunday Mass. Santa Barbara had history and an air of calm genteelness which I appreciated. The journey there took me through some of California's interesting backroads and farmland, off-the-beaten track.

Terrific Road Trip!
You're dodging most of the tourists and seeing the park at an interesting time of year - between seasons. Those are great low angle shots of the trees in Mariposa.

Thank you!
Thank you! I'm glad I visited during the off-season, I'm not a big fan of large tourist numbers! I appreciate your encouraging comment on my photos from Mariposa.
