And we are off. Off to Switzerland, via France for a few days, for most of September. We’ve been pretty well occupied throughout July and August since our June trip to France. The garden has been looking absolutely splendid, helped by a lot of glorious weather and no battering of heavy wind and rain. The almost drought conditions of August have left it a bit dry in places but we have had no hosepipe ban and in fact have had some rain where lots of England has not. Gentle soft rain, the sort the flowers love. We’ve survived the British Heatwave which was supposedly going to kill tens of thousands as we’ve survived the Covid pandemic (so far at least and not surprising as we have both managed (touching wood) not to catch it 😊). I’ve ... read more

And so we came home. We left the campsite early enough to hopefully get the earlier ferry as we had on the way out.....ha ha sometimes things don't go the way we expect ? I'ts qute a few years since we have left France from Calais docks. We have most recently used the Chunnel or Dieppe to Newhaven. Calais has grown even bigger since our last visit. It has also acquired some slightly confusing directional signs.. if you are not accustomed to them. We were concentrating on the ferry we were to use Irish Ferries. Didn't want to accidentally get DFDS or heaven forbid P&O. So we followed the signs to our type of ferry. We should have followed the much smalller vehicle signage but hindsight is wonderful isn't it ? So we found ourselves in ... read more

It struck me as I was belatedly sorting out the last photos from the trip that the text I put into the blog for the drive up to Laon two days ago should actually be in this one. Never mind. Not going to change it now because if I do and republish it will send everyone another message and I don't want that. ? Anyway we drove from Laon up to the north, near enough to Calais to catch the ferry in the morning. Stopped at a supermarket and had a nice shop choosing all of my favourite foods. Only regret is failing to find any Fallot Nut mustard which is a little bit specialised. Have bought it online in the last couple of years but postage to the UK is now so expensive I can't ... read more

What an absolutely super town, or city really as Laon has a cathedral. To make our day even better the sun was back in full and we had a glorious blue sky all day long. Fantastic. Smart Arse was more than happy to take us up the very steep hill into town which is built on a high ridge with views across the valley below in all directions. We found a car park on the edge of the ramparts which still almost surround the old city. It seems that parking in the city is free which was a pleasant surprise. The main street was festooned with multi-coloured balloons. It looked amazing. So much more impressive than the tradional bunting used in most places. I've seen photos which show that Laon in other years had a display ... read more

Well that was rather a lot of rain... but can't complain the only other rain we have had this trip has very kindly fallen at night and cooled the air down after excessively hot days. Smart Car was already loaded and ready on the trailer but still needed tying down to the trailer with its straps and the trailer needs to be on the back of the motorhome. Fortunately the overnight rain gave us a break as we were getting ready to leave. Long enough to load car and trailer. We had such an enormous pitch that it was quite easy to get set up and on our way. Heading north in a Westerly direction as the rain cloud very defintely to the East. We were heading for the blue sky and sunshine again. The drive ... read more

Europe » France » Champagne-Ardenne » Chaumont June 25th 2022

We decided on waking that Troyes was perhaps not the best place to visit on a Saturday so after a study of the map found the nearest next place of interest is Chaumont. At 80km it was not exactly near by. The area round the campsite is all forests and of course lake so though ideal fo walking and cycling not for us. We stopped at a village Bar-sur-Aube half way along when we found there was a market. Had a wander round and bought some fresh veg in the indoor market hall. Discovered later that the green beans were not as fine as they looked and will give those a miss next time but the strawberries were superb. Nothing we fancied buying from the market so we returned to Smart Arse and continued on the ... read more

Today we really did get to Mesnil-Saint-Pere on the Lac d'Orient even if if did take us an extra day to get there. Bob did suggest we could stay at the Merry campsite for another day but I was aware of the day of the week, Friday, and that the Mesnil campsite was likely to be busy at the weekend because it is by a lake so undoubtedly gets a lot of weekend visitors. Also no pool at the Merry site and I've swum every day except first couple on the Somme before the weather warmed up and at Merry. Easy to drive off from Merry as the car was still fastened onto the trailer. Not quite as easy as expected though as the road to the campsite is narrow and the campsite has a shop ... read more

Quite sad to leave our lovely site at Limeuil as we have really enjoyed our stay there. Found out later than the 2022 ACSI inspection has awarded them the best located site again and that is no surprise is it really is in a wonderful spot. Across the bridge from a beautiful village, access to two mighty rivers, the Vezere and the Dordogne and close to so many of the gorgeous villages of the Perigord region. Our drive was exceedingly scenic though the first part to get us out of the river valley was somewhat windy. Once away from there though we were on good, nearly always straight roads through lovely scenery. The further along we went the more scenic the route as we climbed up and over the Massif Central range with wonderful views across ... read more

Europe » France » Aquitaine » Bergerac June 21st 2022

Super day out today. Apologies for rather a lot of photos but we went to so many super places it's too hard to chose what to show here so ended up with an overload. I highlighted Issigeac on the map as recommended yesterday as a lovely village to visit though it is most famed for a superb Sunday market and this was not Sunday. Then circled 2 more places along the route and off we went. Lovely drive even without the specific villages as this is such pretty countryside. Issigeac first. No market but that meant we could wander far more freely and take photos without having to avoid accidentally including anyone. We had a really lovely stroll around, there are some wonderful buildings, some dating back to the 12th century. In Alsace there are pretty ... read more

What a lovely day we have had. We were invited to visit friends for a long leisurely lunch at their gite in Lamonzie, near Bergerac. When I say friends we had never actually met but had been talking to each other on Facebook for 2 1/2 years as we are both sellers on the same online platform. Such a pleasure to find we got on really well and our husbands hit it off right away too. Lunch was on the patio, in the shade as it was Hot and lunch was perfect, salad and cheese and all sorts of lovely French nibbles. Then it was pool time and have to say the rest of the day was spent in and around the pool, swimming, chatting and keeping cool. Had a pretty amusing hour which I will ... read more
