We love the Kentucky Derby. In years past, we always had a big Derby party at our home. We did all the Derby activities, including champagne, mint juleps, betting, and the highlight, a hat contest. Having been to the Derby, the excitement of race day, and the "most exciting two minutes" in sports has become a tradition with us. Though our current home is too small for a party, we still regard the first Saturday in May as a special day. What makes it special? Some Derby history from Sportsletter: Before airplanes and space travel, radio and television, the Great Depression, and two world wars, there lived a horse race in Louisville that's stood the test of time. Baseball may be the Derby's only elder sport in America’s young history, but I would argue the Derby ... read more

Yesterday we began a nearly 5 week journey that we had long planned, following the course of the now famous Lewis and Clark Journey of Discovery in 1803-6. At the request of his friend, president Thomas Jefferson, Meriwether Lewis put together a brave company of men to explore the newly purchased Louisiana Purchase, surely one of the greatest real estate deals of all time. More on that exploratory mission starting with my next post. But we started with an opportunity to see another of America's great national parks on the way to the starting point of our real journey. We needed a stopping point in Kentucky because the drive to St. Louis would have been too long. The choice was between Mammoth Cave National Park and Buffalo Trace Distillery. We chose the park, although I am ... read more

I woke up with a heavy heart and a heavy stomach. The stomach was a result of the first day on the job for the pizza maker in the Paintsville Pizza Parlor and a heavy heart because of the waitress that served the concoction. She and I got into the usual conversation over my accent. As the conversation progressed from “where are you from?” I of course said I was crossing the country on a motorcycle. She asked, “what on earth made me stop in Paintsville, there is absolutely no reason to stop here.” This made me sad. She lives there and yet could not say anything beyond the desire to leave it on her own motorcycle. That her desire was to leave on a Harley and not a BMW was not the point. The point ... read more

Our second ever visit to Mammouth Cave National Park was with Bill and Loretta. We chose a different tour, Domes and Dripstone, which descended 26 stories below the surface! Lots of stairs and narrow passageways. A large group of ladies, dressed like Mennonites, provided beautiful vocal singing music in the cave as we walked. The next day we visited the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green. Mike’s favorite was a 1970’s Donnybrooke green corvette. Our hosts at Singing Hills RV Park invited us to their small country church which we enjoyed on Sunday.... read more

Our second Harvest Host stay was the Benton Family Farm Agricultural Learning Center south of Cincinnati. This 260 acre 4th generation farm has goats, chickens, ducks, rabbits, horses, sheep, cows and Taco, their Llama. Nearby was the Ark Encounter, a Christian young Earth creationist theme park we visited. The Ark structure was enormous inside and out! The science behind its construction and operation was impressive. That night Jen, Eric and the boys hosted us for dinner.... read more

Day 1 May 28, 2022 Saturday (Rob and Dina) I didn't get much sleep as we had an exciting night after a bear decided to pay a visit to our garbage can in our front driveway. It was a big bear too. I thought I might see a bear this weekend, since we are spending it in the mountains in KY, but I did not expect to see one before we even left home! Despite getting to bed late and struggling to calm down enough to sleep, we woke up ready to get going. We headed out sometime after 10 am and went the familiar way through Oak Ridge to the I-75. It's a long drive, so we chatted about politics, science and our dreams for the future. After we talked for a bit, I listened ... read more

Travel day form Nashville to home via Louisville. We slept in today. Did not get up until 0830, which for a dairy farmer is sleeping until after the normal second breakfast. Usually there is a breakfast snack before milking and another breakfast after milking. Leo had a walk to the park and then we loaded up the truck. We departed Nashville into a cool cloudy day. We drove for just a bit and then had a quick stop for breakfast. Our first stop of the day was in Louisville at the Evan Williams. Took a look around and Pete picked out a couple of specialty selections of whiskey that are not available at a regular store. We decided we should check out the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory next. It is only a few blocks down ... read more

Heading south to get out of the cold! Dropped off Miller at his vacation home. Leo gets to go along. Snow on last part of the drive heading into Bowling Green. Roads were only wet and no ice or snow. Dinner was at a nice Mexican restaurant. Leo was not too sure about the hotel stay. He had a few barks when he heard the neighbors, but finally settled down for the night.... read more

This is probably my longest blog post but wow! What a week! Not sure how I feel about Kentucky now haha. Sunday: Early morning to Mammoth Caves national park which is about 30 miles away. Beautiful weather on the surface- high of 70* and sunny. The caves of course do not have weather- they are around 55* year round. Copper and I found a few trails around the visitor center which went by natural entrances to the caves and along the Green River. I was completely fascinated by the river ferry and watched it shuttle cars across the river for a while. After lunch I dropped Copper off at the dog kennel in the park, hopped on the bus and did a 2 hour tour of the caves. Dogs were allowed anywhere above ground but not ... read more
