During the night we heard thunder and heavy rain on the deck above, the lounge Deck was a little wet underfoot this morning and Ljubo nearly got soaked clearing the water from the canopy above.
The sun came out for a few minutes casting wonderful reflections of the yacht masts bobbing about in the small harbour of Milna. We set off around 8.30 and arrived in Split around 10.00am. As we had been to Split last year we opted out of the guided tour so just took ourselves off to rediscover the ancient Roman palace. We had just walked through the ancient bronze doorway into the old palace ruins & suddenly we felt part of history as two centurions just happened to pass us by.
The 1,700-year-old Diocletian Palace built for the Emperors retirement may be nearly the oldest place in Split, but this remarkable Roman ruin still bustles with cafés, bars and restaurants forming the modern centre of the city.
Some 3,000 Splicani are even fortunate enough to live inside the complex, which originally housed Emperor Diocletian and his garrison, back when this part of the Adriatic coast belonged to Rome.
I remembered from our visit last year
listening to traditional Croatian singers performing in an open circular arena, the acoustics were amazing and it was a delight to listen to these singers once again.
We then sat & enjoyed a coffee, the cathedral was our backdrop. We spotted our group from the ship pass by and we gave them a wave; it was beginning to rain a little but we were undercover enjoying a hot cappuccino.
The inside of Cathedral of St Domnius, was interesting with beautiful wood carved doors, marble columns and iconic frescos. We did not venture up the bell tower but did go down into the crypt.
There were so many large groups of tourists, Split is obviously a very popular place to visit. The majority of groups had the Quietvox headsets, but not all, so we heard a continuous gabble of different languages as the tour guides explained the historical facts.
It wasn't long before the rain had stopped so we could enjoy meandering through the narrow streets.
12.30 a buffet lunch was being provided on the ship so we headed back along the quayside. A lunch choice of Tuna, Pork, Salad & Pasta, a little rest and
then we pottered out again to enjoy the warm sunshine which had finally made an appearance.
The main promenade, called Riva is a great place to sit and watch the world go by.
We are moored in Split overnight so will be heading into the old town to revisit a restaurant we ate at last year.

I didn't realise Split was so steeped in history - I had only heard of it as a sunny holiday destination. Thanks yet again for your wonderful blogs and photographs. Our news is that we became grandparents for the first time on Saturday - a little girl , with no name as yet. Looking forward to the next installment of your travels . Love Ruth and Paul xx
