Yellowstone NP
Roaring Mountain Tuesday. 29 August, 2017
I was worried about getting a campsite in Yellowstone, but Kerry assured me there were plenty of walk-in sites available. We had a beautiful drive down from the campground to the north entrance at Gardner. At the gate the campgrounds were listed and showed which were already full and which had sites available. We decided Norris would be centrally located and was fairly close to the north entrance. Wouldn't you know, the road was under construction, with one lane traffic and long waits. We estimate it took us 45 minutes to go the 15 or so miles.
I was much relieved to see that Norris CG had sites open when we arrived at last. But the fun was just beginning. The woman registering campers was on her second day of working there, and between waiting in line and actually getting checked in, it was another 45 minutes to an hour before we got to our site.
Once we got our camper set up, we went out for a short afternoon of sightseeing and again fell in love with Yellowstone.

We had

Geyser out of a boulder in Gibbons River another good day in Yellowstone, but how could we not?
We drove to Canyon Village then turned north toward Tower. Along the way we got a cell phone signal and managed to talk to David. At Tower we turned east through the Lamar Valley. There are always herds of bison in the valley with a few pronghorn thrown in. Add to that the spectacular scenery, and you can see why Lamar Valley is one of our favorite drives. We saw a few elk near Tower on the way back.
Instead of stopping at Canyon Village on the way back, we continued south to Lake Village and back, seeing more bison along the way. Then back at Canyon, hot showers refreshed us, but we were both tuckered out by the time we got back to the camper.
Happy Birthday, Michael! I'm glad we got to sing to you.

This morning we drove south from Norris past Madison and down the Firehole Canyon Drive. It is a beautiful drive along the Firehole River with rapids and a waterfall. From there we went to the Midway Geyser Basin, stopping

Furole and steam pot at several of the sights. Then we went to the West Thumb geyser basin and then back to Canyon Village. There we saw the lower falls of the Yellowstone River and parts of the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone from the north rim.
Back at the campground, as we were eating supper, our nightly entertainment began in the form of two very large male bisons grazing in our neighborhood. This was our last night in Yellowstone and a fitting end.
