Having visited Ocosingo town and the Tonina ruins we decided that we liked the area so much that we wanted to stay for longer so we headed back to the hotel to ask if we could stay for a second night. Instead the owner, Antonia, invited us to visit one of her families ranches for the night and then go horse riding the following morning.

The ranch was located about 20 minutes by van outside Ocosingo and then there was a 15 minute walk along tracks to finally reach it. The owners, Mathius and Betty, had 5 cows, 4 horses, 40 chickens, 4 dogs and 1 terrapin on their share of 25 hectares which they shared between his brothers. We were welcomed into their home, and had a great meal of fresh eggs, fresh tortillas, and cheese, with coffee grown on their ranch. In the evening, there was an amazing sight of literally hundreds of fireflies in the fields, and when the stars came out, it felt you were standing in the middle of the stars. It was quite a show!

The next morning, Stacey had little choice but to get over her fear of horses, or rather their huge scary eyes, as Mathius and his brother awoke at 5 to go looking for their horses roaming somewhere. We went on a fantastic 3 hour ride up towards a viewing point above the clouds, with Mathius being a very chatty guide and laughing as our horses turned out to be very appropriate for each of us! Keiths had gas, a lot of gas, and at one point made Staceys horse stop dead to overcome the stench! Staceys horse ate all the way!! With her stirrups not quite fitting right either, Stacey even got airborne a couple of times! Woohoo!!

After practically falling off the poor horses and stumbling inside, the day was completed with an early lunch, of fresh corn tortillas, and very very fresh chicken soup.

Life at the ranch was very good, an unforgettable experience with the nicest people and an interesting insight into their way of life and their thoughts on Mexico. Mathius and Betty, with their ranch of 5 cows, 4 horses, 39 chickens, 4 dogs and 1 terrapin were fantastic hosts and without a doubt we have had the best time here! We have even been told to go back there and
