Along Hwy 8
Along Hwy 8 Geo: 59.4583, -135.314
We had a leisurely start after getting breakfast and fuel before we hit the road at 8 am. It was another beautiful day with clear skies and 55 degrees as we headed out of Teslin in the Yukon. After an hour we picked up the Carcross Loop Hwy 8, heading south to Tagish. We followed the 62 mile Tagish Lake along a spectacular range of mountains, finally arriving at the junction of the Klondike Hwy 2.
We stopped for coffee at the Caribou Crossing Sled Dog Camp and wildlife Museum. It was too early for most of the usual activities, where they pretty much cater to the charter buses of tourists coming upmfrom the cruise ships out of Skagway. We did get to photograph some mountain goats high on a hill at the back of the property.
We continued to follow Tagish Lake along Hwy 2, and then the Tutshi Lake, another 30+ mile lake. Along the way we passed back into BC from the Yukon Territory. As we climbed in elevation towards Fraser and the Alaskan border, low clouds and fog filled the valley ahead. By the time we reached the White Pass Summit, the fog

Crossing the border, we headed down the canyon opposite the tracks of the White Pass Railroad which runs along the canyon from Skagway to Carcross. On a clear day the vistas are probably incredible. We spent thirty minutes waiting to pass through US Customs inspection. A tour bus in front was cleared without even checking the passengers, while we had to play 20 questions, afraid to admit we carried an open bottle of wine. Our Homeland Security at work.
We arrived in Skagway under heavy cloud cover and got checked into our hotel. We toured the wonderful little town and decided to try Skagway Brewing Co. for dinner. It never did rain a drop. All that may change tomorrow according to the weather forecast.
