It was a strange feeling waking up knowing this was the last day we would go through the morning ritual. We had agreed that we could afford to get up an hour later and leave by 8am. After all we only had 66kms each to do today. An easy day to end with.
Off we went with Dave as the first driver for the day. We were actually very close to both Washington and Baltimore, two very big cities that we had to navigate between to get to Annapolis. This made it even more remarkable that we were still going down what appeared to be country roads with beautiful lush green forest, or open farms and still the odd field of the ever present corn crops. First change over was for Jeff to drive. Jeff jumped in and followed the GPS setting, without checking the route notes. To say we made a wrong turn would be incorrect, in fact we failed to make a turn that would have been correct. Anyway it was only 6 "bonus" kilometres out of our way. Back on course and I jumped in for the next leg in the RV. We were now getting much
closer to the coast. We navigated into the urban sprawl and a freeway and we're ready for our last change. Tommy jumped into the RV. We did fine until the last kilometre. We were meant to turn at Bestgate St. We missed the turn. Tommy was ahead of us but couldn't wait on the corner to let us know that was where we should turn. We figured we had missed the turn after about a km and doubled back and made the turn and proceeded to wait at our designated spot for Tom so we could all ride the last few kms together. Tom had decided to have a quick look for us before settling on the corner. We missed each other obviously because he sat on the corner and we at the petrol station for about an hour waiting. We eventually found each other and started the last 3km ride in together. Annapolis is a beautiful old city. It has a rich port history. We rode to the dock and decided a flag pole was our official end point. We shook hands, we took photos, we dangled our feet in the water. There wasn't the sheer elation or joy
that may have been expected. It was more relief, we had finally made it. We had survived the ride as much as each other. We cycled across America! A celebratory ice cream and a little wander around the dock area and back to the RV and a decent RV park. We cleaned ourselves up and went to a nice sports bar for dinner. By 10:30pm we were in bed. Tomorrow we hit Washington for the 4th of July celebrations, once it all sinks in, I'm sure we'll celebrate properly. Footnote #1: Punctures/MechanicalsTommy was the puncture King with 6 punctures. Jeff made a late charge but pulled up short on 5 punctures and a few mechanical. Dave who went to the early lead with 2 punctures early on never punctured again. And I managed to ride over 3000kms without a puncture.
