Today we took the Metro to visit the Summer Palace. It cost us 35 cents each to ride the metro for over 45 minutes. The Summer Palace was a former playground for Emperors during the summer heat of the Imperial City. The palace is a huge park-like area with lakes, gardens, bridges and palaces. It covers 720 acres of which 3/4 is water. The central Kunming Lake covers 240 acres and was man made. The excavated soil was used to build Longevity Hill. Longevity Hill is the focal point of the Summer Palace.
We enjoyed the lovely stroll around Lake Kunming. There were many ornate bridges to cross over and lotus flowers to view. Many locals were also enjoying the park. We enjoyed seeing the different types of hats people wore. We found it interesting to see young women wearing ankle socks with pretty little sandals!
We returned on the metro back to the area we are staying. From there we visited a local grocery store that had items we had never seen before in our local grocery stores. We ended up only buying some water!
That evening we enjoyed another delicious meal at a local restaurant. They had some very strange things on the menu, but we played it safe with sweet and sour pork and some stir fried broccoli. Maybe next we will try the deep fried chicken feet!
