So today started very early as we had an early flight, so we had to leave Sarah's house at 4am. This was a delicate operation as we had to make sure we didn't wake everyone up (especially Rory). Mission accomplished, we arrived at the airport, and checked in promptly. First stop was to get some much needed coffee and a spot of breakfast at Wetherspoons. We then boarded the plane, and had a brilliant flight and even arrived ahead of schedule.
Once at JFK airport and successfully making it through customs we hopped on the AirTrain and Subway to get us to Times Square. Our hotel is just a 2 minute work from Time Square so we checked in, deposited our bags, and headed on our way. We couldn't resist a quick pit stop at Times Square to marvel at the sheer size and magnitude of the place.
We then hopped on the subway and headed to Madison Square Garden - which in all honesty was a bit disappointing as there was not much to see. So we left there and headed to Macy's - this was such a large store, and had every brand you can imagine or
ever need. We browsed, but managed to avoid buying anything. We then headed uptown to Bryant Park, which had a skating rink so we stayed a while and watched (and laughed) at the skaters who were varying in ability and agility. This is the only free skating rink in New York City, but unfortunately we didn't pack our skates so we had to remain spectators.
Right next to the park was the New York Public Library - so we took a wander through the library, and it has to be one of the grandest libraries either of us have visited. We then walked slowly up Fifth Avenue admiring the christmas displays in the windows of the shops. However our main aim was to get to the Rockefeller Centre. We got there - however, so did everyone else. Finally though we managed a way through to get to see the magnificent Christmas Tree. This was so big, and so beautiful and definitely made you feel christmassy. There is another skating rink here, but it was closed for maintenance so we could only admire.
We then decided to head back towards the hotel, stopping off briefly to admire the Radio City Music
Hall which was a spectacular building. We then continued and stopped for a New York tradition - a Chilli Hot Dog from a street vendor. Once we were back at the hotel we discovered that they offer cheese and wine each evening, so we sat down for glass of Prosecco, coffee, cheese and biscuits.
After a little relaxing, we headed down the street for a meal at Local Burger restaurant for dinner. Afterwards the early start caught up with us so we headed to bed for an early night ready for the exciting days ahead.
