Today I am going to give myself a bit of a break from the blogging and keep this one short. It is probably a good day to do that anyway, since it is really hard to describe in words, at least for me, the beauty of nature and each perception of what is being seen.
Leaving San Francisco, we headed South on the famous Highway 1 down the coast of California. We really did not have much of a plan at this point. Leaving the city, we soon started seeing the beauty of the coast. Large cliffs dropping from the roadside for hundreds of feet to the sea below. Hidden beaches cloaked with rocks, only visible once you stopped and hiked down. Surfers, boogie boarders, kite surfers, and windsurfers all enjoying the big waves.
At one point, in a town called Half Moon Bay, we were blessed once again with an hour of whale watching as the large humpbacks fed really close to shore. Breaching and rolling, it was quite a show.
Onward still, we had lunch at a historical tavern called Duarte's. Way back when the owner bought a barrel of whiskey and sold a shot for 10 cents and the bar was born.Further down the road I found a state park where I heard there were Elephant Seals. I paid my entrance fee and headed out on a hike of about a mile and half to the beach to see these blubbery animals. What a treat. While most are out in the sea doing what ever it is they do out there, there was still a group of males on the beach. They played and fought and were enjoyable to watch.
Ending the day, we retired, after a hard search, at a hostel in Santa Cruz. It was actually a nice place and our room, while dorm style, only had us as the occupants.
Tomorrow...
