Helen and Wildy were missing the beach so we drove along the coast west of Palermo. Our mistake was to do this on a Sunday as everyone in Palermo has the same idea. We arrived at Mondello which is a beach resort and drove round in circles looking for parking to no avail. So next we headed to Sferacavallo and found the same thing. Undaunted we drove further west and ended up in Castellamare del Golfo. Here we found La Campana on via del Macello which had tables outside and excellent seafood. After we drove down to the beach and found it easy to park. There were facilities of loos and showers and a bar on the beach and it wasnt too crowded so everyone happy. Returning to Palermo was very slow because everyone else was going back and there was also a Festival in the city which closed several roads including the one our hotel was on! In the end we parked the car and walked back, collecting the car at the end of the evening.
The following day we drove out of town again, this time to Monreale, which has a beautiful cathedral with golden mosaics and is a must to see if you are in the area. Unfortunately the cloisters which are also supposed to be worth visiting were closed. By the time we had walked around the town and decided to visit the art gallery this was also closed, so we drove back down to Palermo for lunch. This was a good time to drive through the town as everyone is at lunch and the traffic is not so horrendous. Lots of places are closed on Mondays but we found the Santa Monica Pub, which was fine.
The next day (Tues) we left our hotel and drove east to Solunto. This has a large area of ancient Roman and Greek ruins which Sicily is famous for. Having climbed up many steps to get to it we were told it was closed because of Fire! Why they couldnt have told us this at the bottom of the steps I do not know! In recompense the museum was free entry but it wasnt very good so we left and headed for Cefalu which is a very nice resort with a big carpark on the front. The recommended restaurant was Vecchia Marina with a lovely view of the bay and the food was excellent. After lunch we visited the Cathedral which we thought might be closed but for once we were lucky and it was worth the visit. Cefalu is a pretty town and pleasant to walk around.
Our next destination was Taormina - a pleasant and fast drive by the motorway which takes you along the coast and around the Straits of Messina from where you can see mainland Italy.

The icons look very similar to the greek churches. ICXC is written by Jesus Head. Being the initials in greek for Jesus Christ. Wow, looks amazing!
