Santorini in a volcanic island rising vertically from the sea with spectacular views. The ship couldnt get near the shore so we had to be tendered in on smaller boats. From the bottom of the small dock we had the choice of going up the steep hill by donkey or by cable car. We chose the latter as it seems cruel to laden donkeys with our large heavy persons. At least photos can be taken from the cable car. Unfortunately the museums and churches were all closed, whether this was because it was a Monday or whether it was too early in the season I dont know. The back of the town is not pretty but is where you need to go to hire cars if you want to travel round the island. At the part overlooking the sea there are lovely shops selling jewellery and art, some very expensive. We looked at a nice watch then found it was 30,000 euros!! We came across a lovely art gallery shop (MATI) with striking male statues in odd places on the buildings around it. It contained some stunning fish art which were really unusual.
After our stroll around and the essential beer stop we decided to walk down the steep and winding path back to the sea. It is actually an easy walk but as it is full of donkeys the avoidance of donkey poo is difficult. The donkeys were on their lunch break and didnt want to move despite our trying to shove them out of the way. In the end we just had to squeeze in between them all. Our tender was still at the ship so this gave us time to sit by the bay and have another beer. The people on the island are very congenial and friendly- highly recommend visiting it.
