Glaciers in the fjords

On leaving Punta Arenas the ship turned north and sailed up through the Chilean Fjords. These are mostly tree covered islands coming directly down to the sea, which is deep enough for our ship to navigate. We sailed up to a dead end where the retreating Blujos glacier comes down to the waters edge and small ice flows break off and float down to the sea. It was a bright day so the ship could get quite close ,so that we could see the scarring of the rocks produced by the retreating ice, the build up of lichen on the edges and gradually small trees growing in very little soil. It was a sunny day but warm clothing is still essential. On leaving the glacier we sailed through other tree covered islands some with waterfalls and guests were pleased that the waters were calm. However this was not to last as the ship had to sail back into the Pacific on it's journey northwards towards the San Raphael Glacier. That evening there were not as many people in the restaurant for dinner and even fewer for the violinist show, which was excellent. Even the bar was empty later. Fortunately we are good sailors and suffered no ill effects. The next morning we boarded a catamaran which took us close up to the San Raphael glacier. This was the most beautiful glacier I have seen because the ice is so old that it contains the most gorgeous blue colours. Large pieces of ice had calved off the glacier and were floating by us. It was great sailing by the pilot that enabled us to get so close. We also saw a small pod of dolphins and a colony of penguins on the way back to the ship. The staff also made sure we were fed and watered on board the catamaran. After all it had been an hour at least since we had eaten! Once back on the ship it was time for a late lunch always washed down with some good wines!
