from boat in on Grand Canal
We are playing serious "catch up" with our blog. Here we are in Florence and are still trying to get Venice posted.
It all sounds very disjointed but we are trying. Trouble is, we are so flat out during the day running around trying not to miss things and when we get in to our hotel late at night all you want is a good nights sleep so you can do it all over again next day.

Venice is truely amazing. I know, we have run out of superlatives and descriptive adjectives but..............

Our lovely landlady , Barbara Lenz, in Vienna told us that Venice was her favourite place in Europe and now we can see why.

Wont go into any detail as we are sure everybody knows about canals and gondolas, so more will have to wait.
We knew Venice was built on water but didnt really understand to what extent.
To see the water from the sea seeping up into St Marks Square thru the paving stones and wooden walkways having to be erected so the massive crowds of people can walk around is something we have never seen before. This was at high tide at

us ready to go
noon and about 2 hours later it subsided to dry.

The canals and gondolas are exactly like you would imagine and to experience the shopping is mind boggling. We saw things made of beautiful glass and jewellery like nothing we have ever seen. Glad the girls were not here with our credit cards.!

Anyhow, its late so will post a couple of pics just to give an overview. Many more to come if have time.
Still have Florence, Tuscany and back to Rome tonight to go...........running out of time to blog.

Bye for now

A & M.

Happy Birthday Mary
Hope you had a wonderful day yesterday. Did Adrian buy you a very special Italian Present? (if not theres still time...)

Memorable birthday
Thanks Jane, yes Adrian did boost the Italian economy with some very nice birthday gifts. Had the wind-up dinner for Trafalgar last night which coincided nicely with birthday celebrations. Great night where we walked down the Spanish Steps to a garden restaurant with 2000+yr old Roman wall along one side of the garden. Lots of rowdy singing and dancing to accompany the dinner and round off the tour on a very happy note. Just got back to our hotel in Paris now (Fri 27/10, 9pm) after walking down to view Eiffel Tower at night and watching cruisers on the Seine. Balmy evening with crowds out picnicking on the lawns under the Tower - and its almost November! Lovely view of the tower out our hotel window too. Look forwrd to seeing the new house. xxx

Re birthday
Thankyou all for greetings, we are missing you too. See my reply to Jane for update on where we are - holiday is rapidly winding down now. Really looking forward to NOT having a 5.45am wake-up call tomorrow, Trafalgar sure covered a lot of places we would not otherwise have seen but its a breakneck pace. Can sit up in bed here and see Eiffel Tower out the window and it really is a spectacular structure. Looks especially fantastic at night, we didnt go up because queues were too long and we were too tired. Lots love to all xxxx
