Today I did a day trip to Salzburg, it was only a two hour train ride, 150 kms from Munich. Salzburg is just over the German/Austrian border. This city is well known for being the birthplace of Mozart and for scenes of The Sound of Music being filmed in the city. The name Salzburg means 'salt castle' and comes from the barges of salt that were transported down the Salzach River which runs through the city.

I walked through the palace gardens that were seen in the Sound of Music movie. From here I could see the Hohensalzburg Fortress at the top of the hill. The city is surrounded by the alps. Luckily for the city, only the cathedral dome and the bridges were destroyed during WWII. I saw a house that Mozart lived in. I walked towards the river and came to the pedestrian bridge that led to the old town.

Crossing the river I was in the old town. I walked along a main pedestrian street and walked past Mozart's birthplace. Then came to the Salzburg Cathedral, the place of Mozart's baptism. The cathedral is from the 17th century and baroque style, but the first building on

this site was a cathedral from 774.

I then caught the funicular to the top of the fortress. From up here there was a good view of Salzburg. In the fortress there was also museum. It is one of the largest medieval and best preserved castles in Europe. Building started in 1077, it only came under siege once in 1525. After more wandering around the city I caught the train back to Munich.
