Mouths on Autopilot

In stark contrast to the flight from Venice to Dubai, our flight to Hong Kong is jam packed. Issy says she can never sleep on planes. I'm not surprised. The movies she watches would give me nightmares for months, and I can't even hear the dialogue. We don't have any local currency to get to our hotel so we try to get some cash from an ATM at the airport. It seems very reluctant to part with any of its hard-earned. We try a smaller amount, and then use Issy's card instead, but all to no avail. We wonder if it's run out of cash, but the person behind us doesn't seem to have any trouble. We begin to fear that our bank account's been raided, or maybe we've been black listed for making derogatory comments about the Chinese government. I don't specifically recall doing this, but I can't be absolutely sure that I haven't. I wonder if anyone will mind if we sleep on the floor at the airport for a few days. Just when all seems lost we try another bank's ATM and it's gracious enough to hand us some of its cash; well our cash really.

We catch the fast and very comfortable train from the airport station into Kowloon, and then a complimentary bus service to the hotel. We sit right behind the driver, and the entertainment begins. It seems he's not happy with some of his fellow motorists. He swears repeatedly at them in Chinese, well he assume he's swearing, and just to be sure we haven't misunderstood he then turns to let us know in no uncertain terms just how bad he thinks all the other drivers are - he's still speaking Chinese but it's not hard to get the drift.

Our room at our waterfront hotel is on the 16th floor and has great views over the harbour. We're exhausted. Issy tells me that we should get room service for dinner and then promptly falls into a deep sleep. We're so tired that our mouths seem to have gone into autopilot. When the porter brought our bags up he said "I hope you have a nice stay" and Issy responded "you too". I suppose it's possible that he might be staying at the hotel. When dinner's delivered, the waiter says "I hope you enjoy your meal" and I also respond "you too". I lie to Issy I that only did this to make her feel better, but I suppose it's possible that the waiter hasn't eaten yet, and if so I really do hope he enjoys his meal whenever he gets around to having it.
