It takes a lot of balls to golf the way I do.

Day 8 –

Free day at Keltic Lodge

Today was a day "at leisure," which is sort of unusual following a transfer day where there were no activities.

We opted for golf at our own expense. My husband is a golfer; I own golf clubs so in a very broad sense, I could be called a golfer. But not really.

The golf course at Keltic Lodge, Highlands Links Golf Course, is supposedly rated in the top 50 in Canada. One review even said it was 3rd. Really? Can you say "overrated"?

Pros: Magnificent views of Cape Breton and surroundings. Lovely weather -- 80°!

Cons: Below average condition. And too expensive for the conditions. Cost per person in off season: C$100 for 18 holes; another C$35 for club rental.

Customer service is not a priority. Young guy in clubhouse was surly. And no one answered phone yesterday or today when I tried to book tee time. Finally went through hotel switchboard.

Following golf, we had a quick bite at the restaurant in the clubhouse. BLT and “breakfast all day” were perfectly acceptable.

Then I headed to the spa for a manicure. My hands looked like I dug potatoes for a living. I felt so much better with
an autumn glitter polish! I'm that kinda girl.

Our fellow travelers had a choice of other activities:

1. Lecture by a naturalist on wild life in the area; everyone I talked to said he was quite interesting.

2. Hike – the naturalist took those who were interested on trails in the area. It seems the only thing they saw was a squirrel, however.

3. Chef session on local seafood. I must admit that to a person, every woman I asked about this presentation talked about how cute the guy was. I really had to use my journalism skills to extract info on what exactly he talked about: dismantling a lobster; cooking scallops and mussels, among other things.

4. General relaxation, including spa services.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the day off, although Peg Ryan said it best, “For a day at leisure, we were busy from 9:30 to 3:30!”

I have added photos below from Ungerers, Pickets and Hohns. Thanks, all!

We dined again at The Purple Thistle, trying different items from the same menu. All yummy.

We then wandered into the Highland Sitting Room to listen to Rob MacLean, Canadian folk singer.

A pleasant end to a pleasant day.
