Up at 5:30 AM, temperature 42. We gained another hour so sunrise is at 4:30 AM... impossible to sleep very late as body clock is still off from the gain of three hours in less than a week. The Alaska Highway formally known as the "Alcan" begins at Mile 0 in Dawson Creek, BC. Alaska highway was constructed during World War II for the purpose of connecting the contiguous US to Alaska across Canada. Completed in 1942 at length approximately 1700 miles it was open to the public in 1948. Today it is approximately 1398 miles due to reconstructions overtime.
We started our trek for the day at Mile 0 by taking a group picture of the crew at the monument at the beginning of the Alaska Highway. The Alcan is a pretty boring ride going north from here until after Fort St. John. About 30 miles beyond St. John we saw the Canadian Rockies peek out again. We tried to find a place for a picnic lunch with little success so instead, "are as I drove". Today, the Alcan went "on and on" and was so mesmerizing it almost put me to sleep. somewhere between Prophet River & Fort
Nelson we pulled off the road to stretch and walk around to get the blood flowing. On our way again with a brief stop in Fort Nelson so Al could go to pharmacy. The last 50 miles to the Tetsa River Campground was interminable but we finally arrived at 4:30 PM. Since we were down to half a tank of gas, we had to fill the tank at the "rip off" price of $1.59 per liter (Canadian$). Dorrie exchanged some American $ for Canadian coins to do a laundry and Gail the proprietor refused to give any exchange rate saying "you should have gone to the bank for Canadian money when you entered country" ...exchange rate is @ $1.34 US for $1.00 Canadian. This experience, pretty much soured us on this campground despite the fact that the store on site was otherwise inviting, especially it's famous Cinnabon rolls advertised in the Milepost Guide we've been following. To add insult to injury, the only place you could get a decent Internet signal was in the store, which closed at 7 PM. I came back after dinner and sat on a picnic bench in front of the store and had a weak
Internet signal to continue the blog… Just as I was about ready to post a long blog for day number 10, I lost the signal and all of my work. You can't imagine how bad I felt that I wasn't going to be able to provide you with your daily reading for the morning, especially Eddie.

Well, on second thought, maybe we will fly join to Alaska some day! You're not missing Naples 95f breaking record days & all the swamp mosquito that came in with the wind. 2 separate County spraying & their population has diminished but still need heavy bug spray outside any screening. Enjoying your pics, etc. Safe Travels to All!
