Today we left Tasmania early in the morning for a short flight from Launceston, Tasmania to Melbourne on the mainland. Before leaving Tasmania, I just want to comment on how beautiful and tranquil this state of Australia was. A beautiful landscape, reminiscent of northern California, with great vistas and very friendly people. This visit to Tasmania was an optional trip before the main trip to Australia and New Zealand began. I am very happy I chose this extension.

Upon arriving in Melbourne, we checked into our very comfortable apartment hotel located in the central city. The accommodations include a living room, bedroom and bathroom with washer/dryer in the bathroom. Particularly the washer/dryer will be very welcome.

We then took a walking tour of downtown Melbourne which included an introduction to the free tram that runs throughout the inner city. What a young, international city it is. I must say my first few hours have left me very impressed. Beautiful architecture with a blend of old and new. Sidewalk cafe's everywhere with people sitting outside for dinner or drinks. Many young people everywhere due to the large University of Melbourne in the area. Finally, a tremendous array of shopping everywhere we walk.

We had a group dinner at a local grill restaurant and I had the chance to have kangaroo. I am told this restaurant offers the best kangaroo in Melbourne and this is the place to try it. So I did. It tastes and looks like beef and is always served rare. I must admit I would not substitute it for beef, but is was good and I am glad I tried it.

Tomorrow we start our main tour of Melbourne and Australia. Should be fun.
