.... and a very twisty road it is in places, with hairpin bends and impatient drivers. Anyway we continued to be blown away by the scenery, and now we are seeing pineapples and chrysanthemums growing and for sale in the markets. It is really interesting to see the changes in the food produced, and also the methods. China was very ordered in their crops, with neat patterns of fields, whereas here it is more casual.
We have had a couple of days in Mandalay which gave us time to explore. Day one I went to the Shwe In Bin Kyang monastery whitch is a late 19th century teak monastery. It was so peaceful there, in the middle of a bustling city.
Today I walked to Mandalay Fort and found a temple enjoying celebrations for the Festival of New Moon (Tazaungmone), and then this evening 3 of us took a taxi to U Bein's Brige which at 1.2 km is the longest teak bridge in the world. After a walk along it (no handrails, very crowded and a bit rickety in places) we took a boat out on the lake to see the sunset, and then during supper in a
lakeside restaurant (which sounds posher than it was) we saw the new moon rising. An awesome and memorable experience that I am so glad i didn't miss.
