From Melbourne to Cebu

A 12:10am flight from Tullamarine to KL began this year's adventure. The pilot did the usual greeting then says something about turbulence and four hours. Was that turbulence for four hours? Turbulence in four hours? Eleanor didn't care, she had already contorted herself into a somewhat awkward looking sleeping position. The comfort pack, entertainment pack and meal arrive within minutes of each other and the cabin crew have also left behind chilly Melbourne and its pesky heating needs and switched to tropical mode; adjusting the air conditioner to what feels like the same temperature I just left in the carpark! And then the lights go off and we're expected to sleep for the next six hours or so. I'm basically awake for the entire duration waiting for the turbulence. Just a few little bumps but it was a good flight and a great landing.

KLIA2 hasn't changed much from a couple of years ago. The long walk to immigration is a fantastic way to stretch after the flight and by the time you've walked the half marathon, the bags are waiting on the carousel. Genius. We had three hours before the flight to Cebu, so we spent an hour in the queue at the check in, an hour eating breakfast and what seemed like an hour walking to the gate to board the plane. Too easy.

The four hour flight to Cebu involved quite a lot of bumpiness. The pilot (who had probably trained at the Dean Andrew school of "play on") seemed non-plussed by this (unlike the previous flight's pilot who had trained at the Jane school of "nervous nellies") and the seat belt sign basically stayed off the whole flight.

Driving from the airport to the hotel was an eye-opener. This place has evidently never hosted an international gathering of any kind because the road through the suburbs displayed Cebu in all its glory. As Dean said, it's chap, chap and more chap. With a dollop of cheapness on the side. I actually can't describe it. Dean had told me it was bad, having been here in February, but until you see it with your own eyes, you just can't imagine it.
