Jackie convinced me that if we got up early and headed west, we may beat the effects of Hurricane Hermine which was southeast of Mattapoisett with a chance to bring high winds and rain. So, that's what we did.

We departed Mattapoisett about 7:30am and took off for Fredericksburg, Virginia. Jackie wanted to make the entire trip back with only one overnight. I thought better but said I would try. We both agreed that if we got tired along the way we would adjust the trip to two nights.

We were lucky with the weather. Not one drop of rain all the way to Virginia. We got to Fredericksburg about 4:00pm. The trip took us through or near NYC, Philadelphia, and Washington DC. We drove for about 520 miles. Jackie took over driving for more than 150 miles which gave me time to rest.

As we looked for our hotel, we realized that we had gone too far and went to turn around on a side road. That's when Jackie said, "Oh my goodness, here are the Greenbriar Apartments." We had almost forgotten that when we moved to Virginia in early summer 1995, the house that we purchased was under construction until September. So, we needed a temporary location and chose the Greenbriar. Too our surprise, the place looked pretty good 21 years later.

After checking into the hotel, we went for an early dinner downtown. We loved Fredericksburg back then and still do today. There are so many neat sites to see and places to dine. We found a good restaurant then drove around to see some more familiar sites. That's when we spotted a sign to Carl's Ice Cream. Yes, we had to go and get in line for some of the best ice cream in Virginia. What a great treat.

Then we returned to watch some tennis on TV and get some much needed sleep.
