Today has been a great day! We got up early and caught the Star Ferry to the island of Hong Kong. This is where the central business district is located. Transportation is fairly inexpensive here and it only cost a couple of dollars to ride the ferry. From the ferry, we rode a bus to the Victoria Peak Tram. We had great views of the harbor from the tram and even better from the peak. We visited the Central Market while we were on the island. I found some cute oriental PJ's for my grandaughters. They were exactly like a pair that my friend Miriam Hipp brought to my daughter from Hong Kong over thirty years ago. Next, we went to the HK Musuem of Art and saw neat exhibits on gold and jade. I talked to two groups of school children while I was there. The girls wear white dresses with different colored belts and ties. They were friendly and told me the colors are different for each school. While we were at the HK Cultural Center, two weddings were in progress. I took a picture of one couple before their wedding and the bride gave me a thumbs up signal. It is very hot and humid and not very different from Alabama summers. Some of the tourists that we have met are struggling with the hot temperatures. Today, we met a few couples from Kamloops, BC. They couldn't believe that we had been to their hometown. We also met a mother and daughter from Australia. Most of the people that we are meeting are on their second or third trip to Asia. Asia is a great buy for your money. Most everything is reasonable. The shopkeepers leave you alone and don't pressure you to buy their merchandise. The city resembles Las Vegas with its thousands of neon signs. Sometimes it is fun to just close my eyes and smell!
Tomorrow, we head for Japan. We will be back in Hong Kong five more times. I hope to hit the science and space museums on the next visit.
Take care,
E
