606 miles today!606 miles today!606 miles today!

That's the longest day so far.
Greetings from Fort Payne, AL. 606 miles today! If you've never had occasion to ride a motorcycle 600 miles in a day, let me just say this: There's a reason why cowboys walk that way.

I left Morgantown at 5:00am and arrived here in Fort Payne 12 hours later. This morning's ride through the West Virginia and Virginia mountains was beautiful, the best riding so far. These are the kind of roads that motorcycles are made for. Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama were just plain HOT. In fact, it was the heat rather than fatigue that made me stop for the night. I've decided that the rest of the trip will be at night. I just can't take the heat during the day.

The new Ultimate seat on the Mothership is worlds better than my old Corbin for this kind of riding. 600 miles with no pain. Excellent!

I met a guy on a Harley in Tennessee who told me about making a similar trip years ago. He said that whenever he would stop, he'd buy a bag of ice and fill his helmet so that it would be cold when he put it on. That's actually not a bad idea. Maybe a few cubes... other places too. After a while, I took to pouring water from my Camelbak bottles all over myself while riding. No matter how much I soaked myself, I was dry in minutes.

It was a rough day, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Riding a motorcycle puts you squarely IN the world. You feel the weather, smell the grass, experience everything fully. Whereas in a car, you just move along in your little bubble, isolated from the world around you. No fun there.

Now, I think it's time for some beef jerky, Powerade and sleep. I'm too tired to go get real food. I plan to be up and out of here by 2:am.

Stay Tuned - Tomorrow, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana.

See you on the road.

Ride Safe,

Alien.
