SALZBURG- AUSTRIA

Grüsse aus Salzburg,

We left Vienna by train at the respectable time of 10 am and got excellent comfortable seats in the 1st class compartment. This time we took some fresh sandwiches and drinks from the station kiosk and were set for the trip.
Departed in nice sunny weather and arrived at Salzburg in drizzle and low cloud, although could still see craggy mountain tops poking out thru come mist. Lovely.
We intended to just make it the one overnight here in order to jump off onto day trips or proceed further into the "unknown". We have no plans from here until Rome.

We managed to secure a ( last one left at 3pm) little B&B, which turned out to be a private house. There are lots of these around and are good and cheap.
This one is owned and run by a little old lady who has let out her basement and is a lovely old home in a nice street only 15 mins walk from the train station.
So far in our travels we have had fine weather when walking to and from our places of accomodation, however this time in Salzburg we had to do the old backpacker thing and hoof it in the rain.

It took us back a few years, here we were with our rain covers pulled up over our backpacks, rainhoods on, brollys up, dragging our wheely bags up stairs, over cobblestones and bridges up thru a park and into the street. We both commented that it was Gods way of punishing us for all the strudles and cream and goulash!!

After arriving at our B & B, our nice landlady gave us a warm welcome to the home of Mozart and showed us where all the sights were on the map. We didnt even unpack as we still had 2 hrs of daylight (albeit in grey drizzle) to get started. Besides, we needed to go into town to grab a bite for tea.

Caught a bus just up the road and jumped out right in the heart of the old part of Salzgurg. The place was (as you would expect ) jam packed with tourists. VERY; VERY touristy ( that,s for you Barbara, both our previous landlady hostess extrodinaire in Wien, AND my dear sister!!)

However, we loved it and hope some pics will tell the story.

Briefly, it is now Sunday morning, sun is shining, not a cloud in sight except for some round the top of mountains. Had a nice breakfast and walked back to the train station where Mary is doing our washing in a laundrtmat while I am doing this blog next door.
We both resent the time doing chores with the weather so beautiful outside so will try to now get a few pics posted on and get out of this i-net place.

We are now giong to try to book a day trip tomorrow down to the snow and glacier area that our landlady in Vienna told us about.
Later today we intend to go to a farm here our new landlady said was nice.
She said if we want to avoid tourists and see some old Austrian rural life on a farm, then this is the place. Apparently, it is where only locals go and no tourists ( so we are told!) Beaudy! Mary, of course wants to go to a farm and pat the horses.
The horses here in Austria,by the way, are lovely. The ones you see in the pics in the busy traffic are so lovely and patient and calm. Guess they have to be!

Pls excuse all the typos as I am one fingerd typist and some of these key boards are different and the letters in funny places.

Those shops look good.... King Street eat your heart out!! Each new place seems more beautiful than the last. I can hear the Von Trapp family singers in your latest lot of pics! xx

B&B in Salzburg
Hi Paul, only just saw your question on our old blogsite. We have been absent for a long time and have just decided to re open it as we are off again on another trip. Haven't been reading it for a year! I don't suppose that your question is now relevant (being a year old!) but here goes....... The place is called "Brigit's B&B" but I don't think she has a website. Just a little old lady who rents our a couple of rooms in her house. We got the place off a tourist pamphlet at the Tourist kiosk at the Salzburg railway station when we arrived. Just rang her (haven't got number sorry) and then walked to her place. If this info is still needed I will try to dig up some more info from our old travel diaries. cheers Adrian.
