Passing through Spain

Hola!

Just passing through this time on my way back from Morocco. I made an overnight stop in Tariffa, Europe's southern-most city and wind-surfing capital. I caught the morning bus to Seville. Even at the end of August it was an unbelievable 45 degree heat, which did not deter me from a busy 3 days of seein the sights. Sevilla's Cathedral blew me away, third largest Gothic cathedral in the world, a great place to explore with good city views from the adjoining minaret tower. Walking up the winding stairway, one receives close-up glimpses of the gargoyles crowning the cathedral's spires.
I had my first spanish cooked Paella over lunch, but it was not til much later in Granada that I went for the Tapas experience.

Both bridges are Calatrava's. They were built for the Universal Expo in 1992. They are called 'Puente del Alamillo' and 'Puente de la Barqueta' ('Puente'='Bridge'). Take care, Baggins.

Great photos Zoe.. the freaky tilted back suspension bridge in Sevilla has always been my favourite... pity you missed out on the flight to Barcelona, woul dhave been good to see Gaudi's Sagrada Familia! – Franco

On the Calatrava hunt
Thanks for filling in the blanks Gus. I was searching for the pointy ´harp´ like bridge of Calatrava´s on a hot 45 degree day, when I came across the other one by chance and although it looks like a Calatrava, I thought I´d better check the facts first before jumping for joy.

Puente de la Barqueta
I assume that´s the name of the ´freaky tilted back suspension bridge´. I was on my way back from seeing it and stopped to get a fresh OJ at a cafe´, got talking to what happened to be an engineer and he informed me that the cables don´t serve the function of holding up the tilted member, that in fact it´s self-supported. Didn´t expect that, did ya Franco?
