Cartagena

Believe it or not, but travelling can be quite tiring (NO, we're NOT complaining!), so we opted for 'only' three main destinations in Colombia and stay longer in each one of them than just a day or two. In Cartagena we had 9 days, which we spent in 3 different locations: Bocagrande, the historic center and Zona Norta.

All were very different. Bocagrande is actually quite horrible - mostly a strip of large international hotels and an ugly beach with many vendors hassling sunbathers. We were forwarned though, so we spent the day at a lovely beach club on a nearby island, which was great.

The historic center of Cartagena is quite the opposite with its beautiful restored coloured buildings, cobble stoned alleys, and lots of nice shops, restaurants and bars. It's absolutely worth being on UNESCO's world heritage list and truly photogenic.

Our third home was a 'Bali-style' small hotel on the beach to the North of Cartagena where we spent totally relaxing days (read: we didn't do anything but eat, drink, read and bake in the sun). Okay, the sand wasn't white and the sea not green as you would expect in the Carribean Sea, but it was many times nicer than in Bocagrande and we had a lovely time.

Summarizing the Colombian part of our trip: go visit Colombia! What a beautiful country, with very nice people and still so cheap! We think it's worth going back and visit more of its national parks, both on the coast as well as inland.

But for now, off to Lima...
