Arts Palace
Home to many murals depicting revolutionary themes & the struggles in life leading up to the revolution.3 flights totalling 20 hrs plus 5 hrs in transit made for a very tiring day. The 15 hr Sydney – Dallas leg of the trip is the longest nonstop flight around however the A380 made the flight bareable with a good sleep during the night. Arrived late on the same day due to the time difference but straight to bed to try & adjust to the jetlag ASAP. My hotel for the first two nights was well located near the heart of the old town – Zocolo square, listed by UNESCO as World Heritage.
One of the most populous (20+ mil) and highest cities in the world at 2250 mtrs and known for its love hate relationship with visitors. The city has a reputation for a chaotic atmosphere where major traffic congestion & chronic air pollution exists alongside a vibrant city of many contradictions. Great modern structures exist alongside the grand and ornate structures mainly built during the 16th & 17th centuries at the height of the early Spanish occupation. Over time these buildings started to reflect indigenous flair for immense alters, ornate gilding, mural paintings and carved decorations of wood & stone.
After a fairly good sleep
day 2 was mainly walking around the old town absorbing as much of the attractions not expected to be covered by our group orientation tour. The big surprise was that there was no pollution or traffic & because it was Sunday some of the major roads are closed to cars & open to thousands of cyclists cruising around the city.
Back to the hotel with early end of day to catch up on sleep. Checkout next day with a short walk to transfer to the tour group’s hotel. After walking the city for 2 days its surprising that for a city this size people & drivers are quite relaxed & curteous, not what I expected.
Organised trip starts tomorrow. 10 going as of when I left but 6 are only doing the Mexico City leg while 4 are doing the whole tour.

Nice one Gerry! 15 hours straight from Sydney is a piece of cake! It's gonna take me almost 30 hours from Brisbane, via Fiji and LA :( Your trip sounds great so far. We'll have a free guide for the majority of our time in Mexico City, pity she speaks very little English - a MASSIVE challenge for my Spanish!!
